Re: NOW

Why do you feel the need to make a new thread after every time spam gets worse and worse here? Your last thread's last post was only 2 weeks ago, and the first one is even more recent. We really don't need three threads about spam.

Also,  you need to be more descriptive in your thread titles. "Getting Worse" and "NOW" don't mean much to me. And also this thread doesn't actually explain what it's talking about, it just assumes you know. What if one moderator came in here, removed all the spam, and then didn't post in this thread and left? Everyone else would wonder what you were talking about.

As far as coding goes, I'm offering my services to IIMarckus if he'll accept. I have a fairly decent amount of free time, and I've been coding in PHP for over 7 years now, so I think I know what I'm doing.

Re: NOW

There are more than just mine bub.

Last I checked, Mateo and IIMarkus were the only Admins, and if you count Cartmic being a Mod.

I don't need somebody talking to me like a kid here(especially if they are as much), there are spam attacks, every day. Am I posting a thread about it everyday? No.

Why do you feel the need to make a new thread after every time spam gets worse and worse here?

So this claim is way off.

Re: NOW

Sure I may have exaggerated but even two extra threads is unneeded when we already have a thread about it. And a recent one, no less, bro.

Well, 1st, don't call me "bro" as I'm not.

2nd, quit trying to play Mod here. People forget things and I didn't recognize there were other threads here about it.

Re: NOW

If you gave it a more descriptive name, then you'd be able to find it easier.

Also, it's the users responsibility to look for a thread before posting a new one.

Re: NOW

Myself, IIMarckus, and Cartmic are all admins last time I checked.

Also, indeed there are several threads about this already, you've posted some of them, I posted one of them, and there are others. Indeed I only posted in this one because I was going to do like I usually do when I sign in and see that the only new posts are spam: delete the spam, and go on about my business if there is nothing new to post about. I agree, it does seem to be getting worse, but we really don't need to add a new thread about it every time a new wave of spam hits the board. These threads will become more spam than the actual spam, since they stay behind and the spam itself gets deleted in a matter of seconds once one of us gets online. I'm not trying to patronize you or anything, but please calm down and post about it in one of the existing spam threads instead of continuing to make new ones.

I kinda doubt it. The website rarely has more than 10 connections to it at a time, and I don't think the spambots work very quickly or anything. But if it's shared hosting and lumped with a lot of other message boards all getting spam at the same time, it's a possibility.

Which raises the question to IIMarckus: Where is this place hosted, anyways?

Your complaining is not helping, especially in a new thread. Your combative tone (in this thread) is not helping either.

I already put some antispam features in place. Although they catch about 30 bots a day, they are proving less effective than I’d hoped, so I have added the ever‐requested form feature. Hopefully it will make a difference.

I appreciate it, but setting you up with code access in some way that doesn’t violate the host’s TOS would take less time than me doing everything myself.

Something that just came to mind, though, is how neat it would be to store the board’s code in a Git or Mercurial repo (perhaps a fork of upstream), and develop changes that way. Unfortunately, I’ve done many direct modifications to the source code, which would have to be backported to a real version.

I have noticed no slowdowns, but if they exist, they are not caused by spambots.

That's weird, as my connection is just fine. And it never has problems either.

But you're also no on as much as I am ;)

Re: NOW

Honestly I'm not that bothered by spam either, and I'm one of the ones that has to delete it. I mean sure, its a bit depressing to come online and think "Hey! People have been posting new things!" only to realize that there are only 2 new posts after I delete all the spambots, and one is a constructive post and another is a complaint about the spam, but the spam really doesn't bother me as much these days.  On the one hand, I wish my idea of creating a dummy ugg boot thread would have worked because then it wouldn't look like the board was active and it all be spam, it would look like one place was active and it was spam, so I wouldn't get my hopes up about people contributing. But obviously that wasn't going to work so I just deal with it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Spam is spam. It's gonna happen. Honestly, I'm more annoyed by the complaining than by the spam. Right now, there are more unnecessary posts in the form of complaints about spam than there are actual spam posts. Because when I delete a spambot, it deletes all of their spam posts. But the complaints stay behind, and grow and grow whenever someone notices another spambot. Something to think about.

Re: NOW

I just got annoyed that when I got on, there was threads being created one after another detailing the same thing. That there pissed me off because than, I'd have to go through them all so that the annoying little block doesn't show all over the place that indicates new posts.

The only way it would be better is if the UGG Boots spambots came back, just to post in my thread that was started because of them in particular.

Let me guess, a random NPC says "UGG boots Luis Vuitton cheap clearance blowout 7uueotie.com cheap blowout price etc. " or something along those lines. If you'd've included that in the Halloween hack, it would have scared a lot of people, me included.

What I've noticed myself is a boy in mart in Violet City telling you this:
"WTF is this sign? 'Excuse me for selection POKEMART to post this.' I don't understand what that means!"

I've told this before but it was kinda funny (and surprising) to see you included jokes made of the spam bots in the hack.

I know that most hacks have serious plot and all, and include small elements of humor..
It would be nice to see an old Gen hack base a lot of it on humor.
Snakewood is famed for being funny.

There was that one, and there was another Pokemart where a girl says "Even with my UGG Boots and Northface jacket, its still too cold!" or something like that, and a guy in the same building says something about SPAM.

There were several small jokes and references throughout though. Whether they were references to memes, other games, the spambots, whatever. Maybe at some point I'll sit down and write out all the references/jokes/trivia for the hack somewhere, and do the same for Spirits and Legends. I'm still working (and re-working) all the story details on that one, but I know myself well enough to know there will be several small jokes and references in there too. Like kkj1116 said, while the plot is intended to be somewhat more serious, its good to include humour too. Because that's life, you know? Even if you're focused on something serious and important, there's always someone else somewhere making a joke or doing something ridiculous.

Re: NOW

I think the spam that infects this site makes it seem less professional. I know that seems ironic considering most of the users I've met on here are under the age of 25. it is the internet, and goofing off isn't uncommon, but other forums I visit don't have trouble with spam bots at all.

And it is rather annoying to see a thread bumped thinking there is new useful information in it, and you only discover that it was the work of a spam bot.

My vote goes towards doing whatever is necessary to rid the spam bots from here. I don't exactly know how this is done, but I know it can be done.

Re: NOW

Very true, the spambots are annoying. We already have a captcha though, so I'm not really sure what else for us to do. IIMarckus is the one that actually hosts the board and is in charge of the coding though, so I leave that up to him. I just delete the spambots as soon as I notice them. I only let this one hang around as a quote because of the irony that it showed up in a thread about the spam (which at the time, was getting as annoying as the spambots themselves). But you are right, it is unprofessional and we are always battling it. Hopefully we can come up with something to stop them from getting through.
