The PokeGods

As many of you may already know, I've been working collaborating on a project attempting to research the PokeGod phenomenon by archiving and discussing the many rumors that emerged during the period of mid '98 to early '00.

This project was inspired by Mateo's own "Secrets and Rumors" hack, which we all know is an attempt to bring to life those very rumors from our youth. When I first discovered the original Twilight Hacking board and acquainted myself with Mat, I began to do a little searching for codes that might be relevant to the hack. From this, I found SailorClef's PokeGods page.

The page was rather small and not very comprehensive, but it struck me as vastly interesting. No other site had such information, and I was surprised to find that the last update wasn't too long before. I contacted SailorClef, and after sharing our interests we began collaborating on the project for the last year and a half. As you can tell by comparing this archive of the page from before our meeting, the project went a long way. We both had a lot to say and a lot of old sites to dig into to find the best way to express our perspectives.

It should come as no surprise that the project has evolved many times. Through our research, we found that many PokeGods once believed to be entirely made-up (Hifishi, Bruno, "Unidentified Dragon", etc.) had legitimate origins. Others that were thought to be single-note PokeGods (such as Doomsay and Doomsday being solely GameShark-obtained PokeGods) were proven untrue, as we managed to track their origin far earlier than once believed. The project went from a simple page of things we noted or found interesting to a full-blown sociology project attempting to explain and pay homage to a phenomenon that would otherwise be forgotten.

Our work has come to a point where I feel ready and proud to share it with this board. A lot of time was spent designing a layout and system of organization, which is now expressed on the RAGECANDYBAR website. So far our most comprehensive projects are one focusing on the PokeGods and another on MissingNo., but we do have plans to extend our coverage to beta information, the Japanese versions (Green version), early videogame and franchise coverage, etc. You can find the much more extensive PokeGods project here: The PokeGods: Secrets and Rumors

Feel free to offer any comments, criticism, or advice. This is an ongoing project, so any help would be appreciated. Also note that we're seeking affiliates (an attempt to revive the early "webring" system). So if you have a freesite of your own that focuses on Pokemon (not just hacking) speak up and we'd love to exchange links.

Thanks man. Right now we're working on a few articles that will make up the brunt of the project (such as a "History of the Phenomenon" article), as well as make it easier for us to split everything onto its own page. Then it'll be far more enjoyable to read.

Well... The site predated Mateo's hack by quite some time (Clef started during the phenomenon), but my interest in the hack brought me to the site and renewed her passion.  The site and hack have influenced each other, with neither clearly beginning the other.

Re: The PokeGods

I was engrossed in the pokegods section of the website...and I was reading through it as you do and then something struck me regarding the Luigi reference. Yes indeed I thought Luigi was a joke of some kind but a similar name Lugia/Luigi spelled differently has appeared in Red/Blue.  I know Lugia appeared later in the series but I was around..12-13 at the time following magazines as many ppl did.  I seem to remember swimming for an awful long time in 1 certain spot and a pokemon appeared with the name above. It was not the "missing no." pokemon and it looked like code errors.

If I could describe what it looked like - this is the battle scene:

                                      Pokemon
------------------------->      %@
                                       //$%
                                      -@%

Lol I know this looks nothing like a pokemon and I think it crashed my game a few times.  (tried to trade).  Can anyone shed some light on this situation as it was a long long time ago and I am 99% certain I had this pokemon at one point.  Shame I dont have pokemon red/blue anymore.

Re: The PokeGods

I read the whole thing on Ragecandybar before I came to this site and had no idea they were linked or that you were the one who made it RedStar.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading up on the subject and it was very informational and entertaining at the time.   I always thought the Legend of the PokeGods were always intriguing whether they were fake or not and that they have become real themselves in our minds.

Re: The PokeGods

Another way to get pokegods:

Beat the elite 4 30 times without talking to anyone besides the nurse and the rivals.
On the thirtieth time, Professor Oak will say, "I'm getting tired of this" and he will let you walk around the hall of fame which leads to a new city where people swap pokegods.

---Is this Real?---

Pikablu:

Go to the daycare center and let him watch a raichu at level 99.
When you go back a while later he will say that your raichu ran away but you can have my pikablu!

Another Pikablu:

Get a raichu and buy a thunder stone and a water stone.
Use the thunder stone, then the water stone and raichu will evolve into pikablu!
