GSC Music Covers (with code)

In the past year I've done a good handful of devamped Pokémon covers in Gen 2 with Crystal's disassembly, but, while I've always had the intention of letting people use said covers in their projects, I've never actually given out the code because nobody has asked. In the interest of making these more available, I'm going to post the .asm files of all my covers in this one thread for anyone interested in using them.

Will certainly do more in the future. I have several more tracks on my to-do list currently, but I'm also willing to consider requests, though I'd hesitate to do more Sinnoh music just because of overlap with FroggestSpirit's goals of completely covering Diamond and Pearl's OST.

Not familiar with the original Sinnoh or Unova music themes, so I didn't listen to your covers of those either, but the Hoenn themes sound really good!

Covered Laverre City from Pokémon XY. The middle section is iffy but the GBC can only do so much with still chords.

Sounds pretty good.  I wonder what it would sound like if you replaced the "still" chords with rapid arpeggiation, instead.  It would probably change the overal mood of that part, but it still might sound cool and make that part feel a bit more alive.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I might do that as an alternate version of Laverre with a busier midsection in the future, though if I'm going to start editing songs I really need to remaster the (not listed in OP because it's so bad) XY Gym Leader theme I did as one of my first covers before anything else.

Just did this yesterday, Ever Grande City from RSE is done.

https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit
http://pastebin.com/7JH4Hxft

I really like how it turned out listening to it after a break from working on it, probably one of the few songs I've done to which I can definitely say "yeah, I'm satisfied with how it's turned out." Which probably means it's really garbage.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Did two more, both from Black 2 and White 2.

Humilau City:
http://pastebin.com/SVaJ88t8
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

Virbank Gym (the variants in the recording are just me having fun with turning different channels on and off, it's not a real feature of the song, though I've been told it wouldn't be too hard to implement in an actual hack):
http://pastebin.com/b3GdCqUd
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

Neither of them are perfect, but I think at least Humilau turned out good, Virbank Gym is a gimmick at best.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Wow, these two litterally sound like as if Nintendo/Game Freak made Pokémon BW2 in the time of GSC for the GB(C), especially that gym one. My compliments! :)

And BTW, it's indeed very easy to implement that turning channels on and off thing in the song. It's just a matter of using callchannel commands in the .channelX_loop pattern, making a pattern with only "note __, Y"'s in it. (Not sure if you've already divided your song in patterns. if you haven't, I suggest doing that because that makes everything like reusing song parts and temporarily silencing channels a lot easier) ;)

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Humliau City is great!  The way you varied the sounds really helped it sound fresh and dynamic.  It's easy to get lazy and not really change up the vibrato/envelope/etc.  throughout the song.  I'm definitely adding this to my video game song playlist on my computer.

Edit: Would you mind enabling the download link or sending me a link, please?

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Humilau is also very great, and as I listen longer, it's actually even better than the Virbank Gym music.

It think it's definitely safe to say that we actually make even better use of the GSC engine than Game Freak itself, in the most cases. ;P

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I enabled download for both of those songs, though I'm sure the uploads could be made to be higher quality.

I do use callchannel for patterns that get repeated a lot, though I tend not to divide the entire thing into patterns. If I ever find reason to use it in-game (the southwest island in BW2 seems like it'd be a good-sized postgame area for a hack, not too large to be overwhelming but still a lot of locations, though I'd wait until Crystal gets a Dex expansion like the one in-progress for Red so I could use the Pokémon from there) I'd definitely look into it further.

I did a devamp of the Kalos Power Plant theme.

soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/huderlem/kalos-p … eme-devamp
pokecrystal code: https://github.com/huderlem/pokestyle-m … rplant.asm

As a side note, do people think it would be helpful to make a sticky mega-thread for music, since there are 3 or 4 individual threads for it, and I don't want to make another one for myself...so I'm just hijacking Mmmmmmm's thread...

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

That cover is pretty good. Feels almost like a Gen 1 song with better instruments (which isn't a bad thing).

As to making a mega thread, I wouldn't be against it if everyone used it, sounds like a good way to centralize things.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I have a series of new covers that I think are just okay; I was waiting until I made a good one to make up for the lesser ones, but they all turned out to be lesser ones so I may as well update.

Battle Factory (from Emerald):

https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

Lacunosa Town:
http://pastebin.com/Bfg68CV7
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

They all have their problems but I think they're decent enough to post, I think I just chose songs that don't translate as well to 8-bit as past ones I've done. Hopefully people still enjoy them.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Your GSC covers are just pure awesomeness in my opinion. Especially the DPPt and BW ones <3 (but the reason why I like these the most is also because those are the generations I've the most feelings for (apart from your infallible talent for this in general))

You really could've been working for Nintendo/Game Freak doing this, in the time of GSC

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Thank you for making the .asm files available! You've done a great job imitating different instruments with GSC's four channels. I'd like to use some of them for Polished Crystal; I'll certainly credit you for it.

If you're looking for other tracks to devamp, here are some I'd really appreciate having:

• Hoenn: Abandoned Ship
• Hoenn: Vs. Mewtwo or Mew (Mew is basically a higher-pitched Mewtwo; these are the same in R/S/E and FR/LG)
• Johto: Vs. Ho-oh and Vs. Lugia from HG/SS

By the way, your link to the Virbank Gym theme goes to Humilau City.

I don't think Pigu has released the source for these songs but you could try to ask him for permission.

And Virbank is fixed, thanks for pointing it out.

Thank you very much!

The source code for TPP Anniversary Crystal is now public, including the custom music (which I didn't realize existed). Actually, I think kantolegend.asm might be the Vs. Mewtwo/Mew track.

Oh, I didn't know the source was released, that's very convenient! The Kanto Legend theme in TPPAC is from XY, though it's still a remix of the Kanto wild battle theme. I think it's a more interesting remix than the FRLG version, though.

My spacebar broke halfway through the cover and I don't know if it can be fixed, so future covers will probably take more time to do unless I fix it or figure out how to change my keyboard inputs to map spacebar to something else.

Wow. You did that in record time. It sounds good too. Thanks a lot! I'll make sure to finish the map using it for the demo (probably out next weekend).

Sorry to hear about your spacebar. If you're using Windows, SharpKeys can remap something like CapsLock or Right Shift to Space.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I'd recommend AutoHotKey over SharpKeys myself, because SharpKeys edits the registry to more permanently change key mappings (until you change them back, that is.)
This may be safe if you know what you're doing, but it's easy to set AHK to run your remapping script on boot and just as easy to disable it if something goes wrong.
That and SharpKeys is pretty limited in what it can do, but I'd guess this may not be a huge deal for you if all you want to do is remap another button to Space Bar. But if you wanted to use it for anything else you may run into limitations.
That being said if you absolutely need the remappings to work on login screen, AHK wouldn't help :p
