help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

hello. I was trying to change the palette color for the female hero of pokemon crystal but I dont know how.

I know the sprite definition list uses these bytes

[2byte Pointer to Graphics] [data length] [Rombank graphics] [Image type] [Standard palette]

but when I change standard palette value to 00 (or to any other character) nothing changes so maybe this isn't what controls the color of the character.

I got 3 questions:
- how can I change the palette color for the female hero? I want her to be red instead of blue (the same color as the male hero)
- what does standard-palette controls if isn't the color for the sprite as I thought it was?
- when I was looking at the sprites for the game using tile molester I noticed theres sprites for the the male and female hero walking, standing, in bicycle and I think using the squirtlebottle (not sure if it was for this) but I didnt noticed any sprite of the hero fishing. any idea about whats wrong here? what I want to do is change the female hero overworld sprite

since this is the sprite for the female hero I can't just go to the event header and change the people event's color and function byte like with any other NPC sprite. (or at least I think I cant)

thanks.

Its all good, no harm done. Also to try to answer your question, I have no idea what would be causing that problem. I made the hero in Gold green using that byte in a test run and it worked fine. But then again, I've never tried it in Crystal. Miksy might know about more, he hacks Crystal.

Re: help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

I tried changing the color of the hero in Gold and it doesn't work either.

the sprite definition list for the hero in Gold is located in offset 147DE. The bytes are these:

0040 C0 30 01 00

so 00 is supposed to be the standard pallete right? I changed the value to 02, 05, 0A and 10 just to try and see what happens but nothing changes. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Re: help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

if I remember correctly, the numbers for the pallet are 00 through 07 and they coincide with the sprite pallets you can see in the pallet viewer in VBA or whatever emulator you use. For example, 00 is red, 01 is blue, 02 is green, etc.

Re: help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

It uses special code to map Sprite 0x00 either to Gold or Crystal and it sets the colors in there as well. You will pretty much have to find that code and change it.
The fishing animation is stored in half only. The fishing pole and body parts are loaded on demand to VRAM and always overwrite Hero only. Also, all other people using hero will look wrong while fishing.

Ok, thanks. And what's the structure of that code? how do I find it? I'll try to do it first in gold and then in crystal.

So far all I know it's that the palette is 00 and the sprite for the male hero is 01

Re: help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

You won't find the code in a Gold rom, since the player select is only there in Crystal. I was referring to the default names of the male (Gold) and female (Crystal) player characters. You will find the asm code using a debugger while tracing where the sprites are loaded from.

Re: help editing the female hero in pokemon crystal

I tried changing the standard Palette in Gold again and it worked. All I had to do was restart the game and create a new game. Oops. (It doesn't work in Crystal because the reasons Tauwasser mentioned I guess)

I see, ty.

Well, I guess I need to know ASM in order to change that then.

I could just do it in Gold or Silver but I'll try it out and see how it goes. First I will need to read those beginner guides about ASM.

Also, changing the sprite that shows in the trainer card in Crystal also requires knowing ASM? (changing the sprite and the color palette)

Oh, thanks! it works. I edited Kris' fishing sprite thanks to that.

Now all I need is change the colors somehow.
