[Red] Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode

A few years ago, I created a "complete" modification for Pokemon Red entitled Pokemon TRE: Team Rocket Edition.  I put complete in quotes because it is fully playable, but the only things that were changed were tiles, map blocks, or table entries.  Now that the PokeRed disassembly exists (and I have learned assembly), I am proud to announce the sequel to the game, Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode.

The story line is simple, you play as a member of Team Rocket who reports directly to Giovanni.  Help him grow Team Rockets influence on the region of Aster by completing missions and taking over cities along the way.

It's not technically a sequel, since the story line is not based upon the contents of the first game, but its the same premise (just 100x better).

Here is the website for information:
http://poketre.com

What this game will have:
New Story Line
New Gameplay Features
New Graphics
New World
New Items
New Types/Attacks

What this game won't have:
Next Gen Pokemon

Public Beta

Here is the status as of 8/12/2014:
New Screens: 95%
New Sprites: 75%
New Items: 50%
New Types/Attacks: 0%
Map Layouts: 80%
Map Scripts: 10%
Trainer Data: 10%

Hard Mode
This game will feature a hard mode:

Hard Mode Features:
1 life for your pokemon.  If they faint, they are gone for good
1 life for the player.  If you black out, the game is over.
The game autosaves all pokemon stat changes, so you cannot cheat.

Normal Game Features:
The game keeps track of your win/loss/kills/ko's throughout the game.
The game also keeps track of your high score and best time.
High score is only in hard mode, best time is in normal mode.
The scoring it based on just about everything you do in the game, from updating your pokedex to evolving a pokemon to defeating a trainer.

I have played the previous TRE and I think it is already an awesome hack. I am looking forward to the sequel version. What's more, can you add some new plots after beating the League?

P.S. The league is really not hard to defeat in spite of its high level.
Forgive my terrible English.

Yeah, finally got around to posting and updating the site.  A private beta might be an option, but by the time that's possible, it will be close to being finished anyway.  The way I am working on it, I am saving the map scripts/trainer data till the very end, so right now the game isn't very fun to play lol.

As for music, I plan on just creating new songs for each town, nothing crazy.  I haven't even looked at how it's done, and honestly I play on mute anyway, but I'm not going to change the entire game and leave the music the same!

The final boss will be.... someone that you encounter throughout the course of the game.  That's all I can give you right now ;)

Thanks!  Don't worry, this game won't have an abrupt ending, there will be plenty to do!

I have updated the website and the first post to announce the new Hard Mode.

Again, the site is http://poketre.com

Hard Mode Features:
1 life for your pokemon.  If they faint, they are gone for good
1 life for the player.  If you black out, the game is over.
The game autosaves all pokemon stat changes, so you cannot cheat.

Next wednesday will be the next update, announcing a few game play updates.

Game status so far:
Still working on updating the maps/tilesets.  I see this part lasting for a few more weeks (unfortunately).

Re: [Red] Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode

What a cool hack. Especially very smart use of graphics for only 4 colors. When you will create the music, you can use some music of me (if you credit, of course).

Hacks Gameboy 8-bit music in Pokémon Gen I & II, composes 8-bit music in FamiTracker

Re: [Red] Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode

The new update looks interesting, pokeglitch ^^

There have been hacks with changed difficulty before, I was wondering if someone might implement more than one difficulty mode in the same PKMN hack. The hard mode sort of reminds me of Fire Emblem.

A similar idea to multiple difficulty modes would be multiple endings. Any thoughts on having those?

Only now I checked out some actual screenshots of the hack, and you know, I'm impressed!
This looks really cool and should totally turn out a hack worth playing.

Really awesome! Are you going to change moveset of pokemons because gen 1 pokemons have not got a good moveset.

Re: [Red] Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode

I haven't heard of FireEmblem, I'll check it out.  Multiple endings isn't something I've though of, but I like the idea. Itll be hard because there is a main mission that is the point of the whole game, but I'll see if I can think of something.

As for updating the Pokemon movesets, I haven't and wasn't planning on it.  Maybe some learn levels, based on when you encounter them in the game, but I don't think I'd be able to create movesets that are any better than how they are now.

Thanks everyone for the support.  There's plenty more features and surprises to come ;)

Re: [Red] Pokemon TRE2: Team Rocket Edition, The Revamped Episode

By the way, how is Hard mode different from Normal mode (if you don't want to tell not to spoil anything, that's okay) ?
I'd imagine there being a function that is called each time a level-byte is picked from one of the "lists" (trainer, evolution, wild pokemon), and then you do something with that level byte.

I was thinking of such thing before myself, but it wouldn't have fit in in my own hack though, so I scrapped that idea.

Actually, there is no difference in Pokemon levels between hard mode and normal mode.  The only difference is in hard mode, you and your Pokemon only have 1 life.  So instead of your Pokemon fainting, they die and get removed from your party. Instead of the player blacking out and warping to a pokecenter, you black out and see the game over screen.

To keep hard mode even more interesting, I've added a feature to keep track of how well you preformed in your one life, I.e. your score.  There are like 20 different ways to increase your score, and the degree with which your score increases varies within each method.  For example, you get points for killing a Pokemon based on that Pokemon's level, or you get points for defeating a trainer, but that varies depending on the trainer.   Your high score will always be saved, regardless of how many times you start over or switch to the other game mode

This. Is. Amazing. The disassembly project has revolutionized R/B hacking. I remember playing the original TRE back in the day. I got up to Victory Road and then quit because of the ridiculous level curb. It was pretty notable... in the fact that it was a Red hack other than Pokemon Brown. I love everything about this new hack. Life is awesome sometimes. Good luck with the project!

Thanks! Yes none of this would have been possible without the disassembly.  Don't worry, this game will be challenging but won't force you to do constant grinding just to get past a route

You're welcome!

By the way, this one may very well turn out even more epic than my own hack (and people have been posting lots of positive, and maybe even too positive, feedback about it along the way).
So in any case, you might as well get used to the normal reaction of people trying your hack being "Boooom!!" :D
