Drenn, that won't work. That little rock that you colored in with green uses the same palette that the tree stumps use. Also what palette did you use for the tree? I'm not seeing it anywhere.

What do you mean it won't work? It works. I mucked around with the palettes to make it work. I made a copy of the brown palette to use for the little rock, and gave it the green background. Same deal with the trees.

It's a screenshot, not a mockup.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

The first post is updated with new links and screenshots and stuff. There are too many changes to list, but here's a summary:

- Fully colorized evolutions, hall of fame, Oak intro, slots
- Optionally uses Danny-E33's gen 2 graphics patch
- Adjusted indigo plateau and Viridian Forest palettes (I ended up using "improved" option #1)
- Lifebar is updated dynamically, not just at the end of an attack
- Fixed paralysis animation
- Fixed graphical glitches in the credits
- Tons more bugfixes

(Hmm... not sure what I should write here but I thought I'd come up with something since your work deserves it.)

Well personally, I'm not a big fan of "no gameplay" modification rom hacks but I think I'll try this one later.
Even though it's the "same old" Red, there is now a difference. Good job on making this though and hope you get everything done you intended to.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

This is great. But about GEN II Patch. Did you use Pokemon GSC Kanto Gym Leader, Trainer and Wild Pokemon battle themes in this hack? In our GenII Patch newest release It was changed with RBY themes.

^This.

It certainly looks awesome man. Impossible to guess it's based on a gen 1 game if you don't know it!

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

@Danny-E 33:I fixed the color of Gary's sister since she only appears in one place. But I haven't really fixed this properly.

@Atecaincorp: No I left the music the same. Come to think of it, I also did not use the new overworld tilesets.

@Miksy91: Yeah, this may not be interesting to some people since gameplay is unchanged. I like hacking for the sake of hacking but I'm not even sure I have the patience to make an original hack. Too much designing and planning, I'd rather just be hacking stuff. Thanks though.

I know what you mean. When I started this major hack, DE, I simply re-designed stuff without worrying too much about "what for" I'm doing it. Later on when I learned more, I also become more self-critical. Since I knew I could do things a lot better, I decided to start planning everything out properly from the start and fixed all the things that required adjusting.

It's taken a lot of time though and I certainly see why many good hackers don't want to start developing an original hack/game. Not sure I have even myself what it takes to finish this product of mine although it's clearly more than half complete already.
You could always (not talking straight to you, it's "you passive") do an original hack and not worry about how well everything works. But it would probably go against your habits - I also want everything (or at least, most of the things) to work properly that I implement in the game (even though they only needed a simple fix and to achieve that, I would have to code something new in the game).

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

Thank you for doing this Drenn. I'm going to download the update right now. I'm happy this got finished. Though, you said there was a flag to choose between the sprite styles, how do you change the option in game?

An assembler flag, I meant. There are 2 roms, with and without the gen II patch.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

Hey Drenn, I hope this isn't too late, but you should see about copying over the 3 new updates in V1.2 of the graphics patch, the most important being an expanded, 100% accurate palette table for Pokemon and trainers. There's also a much better sprite for Cueball. And least importantly, the colours in the actual palettes and the colour layers in the sprite data were switched for 21 or so Pokemon so that the end result looks the same, but the palettes are exactly correct to how they are in GSC. (just an ocd thing really, but I'd like that to be in this as well, cause this is so close to being as professional and legit as possible, it would kill me if those palettes stayed 'wrong')

The adjustments to those 21 pokemon will probably help with fadeout effects, I thought some of them looked a bit awkward. I'm not quite finished with this so I'll be sure to integrate your v1.2 patch.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

I know Sawakita did it in Pokemon Wood, you could get the source.

What changes should I apply if I wish apply in a clean Red ROM the colorization only of the OW sprites?

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

I doubt that will be possible. It's either a CGB game or a SGB game. Not somewhere in between.

Like Danny said that's not really possible. SGB colorization is very limited, the main problem being that the super gameboy does not differentiate between sprites and the background. It simply takes the final uncolored image, and applies palettes in an 8x8 grid (which further complicates things, since that 8x8 grid does not necessarily match up with the tiles.) So a sprite must use the same palette as the background it's on top of.

If you wanted overworld sprite colorization you'd need to use gameboy color mode. SGB routines could be reimplemented in GBC mode, like in Pokemon Yellow (and in some parts of my hack), but that's still a significant deviation from the clean rom.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

I guess if you want both colorize and then apply Day\nite system then Gold\Silver engine is needed - this means no more sgb features but full .gbc

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

SGB mode is already dead, but that doesn't make any difference to the day/night system.

My main reservation about a day/night system would be that I'd need to make some kind of dialogue to set the initial time. So far I've been fairly purist in that I have not changed the game itself one bit. Except for those walk-through right ledges in Fuchsia I forgot to fix...

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

Hey Drenn, I was checking out a lot of the coloured attack animations and both Psybeam and Solar Beam are blue. Is there any way to differentiate them and make Psybeam purple but Solar Beam yellow or something?

And I vote no for a day/night system. Like you said, to keep gameplay identical.

And I'm 99% confident that the right ledge thing is that block data was changed, so it's not that this is an exception to changing the game a bit, but that you will actually be reverting the game to its original state from something Froggest changed.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

We could put this hack with no Day\Night, then create another one with the Day\Night.
Only Sawakita did Day\Night (for now), I noticed Sawakita loaded 3 different tilesets, because he noted that in his hack Windows wouldn't glow at nite - so he added the third one.
I dunno why created 3 and not 2 titlesets...
