Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

Hmmmm. Well this and pokemon brown were the best games I played on my mobile becouse my phone is not new and max jar. file is only 506kb. I would like to try more games, but I can't, but eh whatever. Maybe you can change some things in this game like add new pokemon, use gen II graphics and add new abilities what do you think?

Yes, I'm going to use gen II sprites. Took me all day just to get the pokemon sprites working from Danny's hack.
Like I said, I was able to make a flag which toggles Pokemon Blue / GSC sprites. In theory it should also be pretty easy to replace the sprites with sprites from Yellow or Green, from here. They're all conveniently dumped in the disassembly. The only issue is that pokemon Yellow sprites have different dimensions and I'd need to account for that.

Well then you might wanna test out all the sprites, because some GSC sprites have different dimensions also. I don't know if I can remember all of them off the top of my head but I know Dugtrio, and I think Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar all have different dimensions. I might be forgetting some.

Dugtrio and Gastly have different dimensions, and I think everything else is the same. (EDIT: Dewgong also.) Unless backsprites can have different dimensions? But there seem to be a lot more pokemon in Yellow with different dimensions.

I have another question for you Danny, where did you get your palettes from? Pokemon Yellow appears to have 2 sets of palettes (or else a conversion algorithm), one for SGB mode and one for GBC mode, so Gold/Silver may work the same. Crystal, probably not.

Really nice.

I'm glad the trainers aren't being messed with. I suppose some color and less pixelation would do though.

Ah, I forgot about Dewgong. And the reason I was thinking Haunter and Gengar is because my hack Prototype has the Yellow sprite for them which is different.

Drenn wrote:

I got every GSC sprite from here and opened them in paint, used the dropper tool to copy the color and pressed alt+c, alt+e, alt+d to get the RGB for the color and then put those same numbers into Swampert22's PaletteEd GB's Colour Picker and it automatically converts it to SGB and saves changes to the rom.

Drenn, i'm not sure if you used the LCD on/off bit, but it was said that you can only turn off the LCD during V-Blank, otherwise it could damage hardware. My gameboy color now has blurry pixels, as I burnt this to a flashcart. (It might be from age, so idk if this is the cause at all). Just figured I'd throw this out there to have it looked into, and so it won't happen to others with a flashcart (if that was even the cause).

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

You have to get your hands dirty with ASM, since both patches require it, and one probably overwrites some of the ASM in the other.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

Maybe do the contrary would have been a bit better: this because the Graphic patch contains less asm work and routines in terms of dimension, so the overwriting would be less and much of the changes it does could be repointed somewhere else.
Anyway I think, since it is in .GBC format, it would be even better if the ROM is expanded from 2Mb to 4Mb so there would be LOTS of new free space.

Well I'm sorry to hear that... I'm not sure what the cause could be though, I never touched the LCDC register manually. The only thing I could think of is if my other code went past the vblank period and then the game tried to disable the LCD, but that seems kind of far-fetched because that hasn't caused any problems elsewhere... I guess it's also possible that VBA's problems actually occur on a real gameboy, and I have no idea what's going on there.
I set a breakpoint on LCDC and whenever it was disabled, it was on line 145, beginning of vblank. So I dunno... do you remember at what point it started being blurry?

AtecainCorp. wrote:

I picked out Danny-E33's modifications and merged them with the disassembly, which is actually the same thing I did with FroggestSpirit's hack at first.

Rytizs wrote:

I get that, but by my definition of "gameplay", that would change gameplay. If you have access to more pokemon, it's not quite Pokemon Red anymore. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but... I want the game itself to stay the same.

I'll post a big update soon, but in the meantime I have a few candidates for Viridian Forest:
bgb00005_zpsa3f08b05.png

bgb00005_zps799bae0d.png

bgb00006_zps44ab937e.png

The white one looks better to me, for some reason, but maybe I'm just used to the whole thing being in black and white.

You know the glitches that exist in the Pokémon games?
Only the ones named "MISSINGNO." are Missingno.
The others are not. They are their own glitches with their own names.
Sorry, it's a... thing that bugs me a little.

Thank you, Emaj. I don't feel like there should be much of a question about it. #1 is the only one that looks like a forest. There is grass, and there is tall grass.

Re: Pokemon Red Full Color Hack

I think it was a time or two after i started a file on it. I'm not mad about the GBC being blurry at all. I have 2 GBC's, and its still playable anyways. Like I said, it might not have even been the game, but I figured i'd throw it out there incase it was something, so others could prevent it.

Also, my vote is on 1.

Okay I tried improving #1 a bit:

The trees are lighter and the rocks blend in.
(This still counts as #1)

That could work... the fact that you can't fly out of Viridian Forest tells you the sky is probably obstructed by trees. But for now let's keep it between those 3.

Drenn, that won't work. That little rock that you colored in with green uses the same palette that the tree stumps use. Also what palette did you use for the tree? I'm not seeing it anywhere.

Edit: Quote for new page.
