Gen I Theory

One thing that just crossed my mind. Could you, theoretically, make it possible to select gender for the PC character, using ASM?

Re: Gen I Theory

With ASM and the right knowledge, you can do anything that doesnt break the gameboy's hardware limits, so yes

This isn't easy to say, but…

This is not a theory, this is a hypothesis

Sure you could. Enumerate the places you would have to change:

  • Wherever player’s frontpic is displayed (new game, player status screen)

  • Battles, where player’s backpic is displayed

  • Where overworld sprite is loaded

Really, those are the only places that behave differently as a girl in Crystal (except a few places like the pack that change palettes, and maybe a few others I missed). So change these spots to check against some unused memory location which you set as a male/female flag, and you’re done.

Re: Gen I Theory

Well then thanks for the bit of info. Makes me wonder why no one has ever done something like this for Gen I. I mean KBM was able to do this for Gold for Prism, wonder why no one thought of doing the same for Gen I.
