Hack Name: Pokémon Red - Gen. II Graphics Patch
Hack of: Pokémon Red
Pokémon Red - Gen. II Graphics Repository
The readme pretty much says it all:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Pokémon Red - Gen. II GFX&Music Patch
Version 2.0
By: Danny-E 33
---------------------------------------------------------------
Intro:
======
This hack includes several graphical improvements over the
original game to give it the quality of a Gen. II game. It
also includes all songs from GSC. There is nothing new
about the storyline. It is for the purpose of getting to play
through the game again with a little more aesthetic appeal.
It is also highly intended to be a base ROM for anyone to
create a hack of this Gen. I game. With the major overhauls
added into this hack, anyone who wants to create their own
hack of Pokémon Red can use this base ROM and have a game that
is beautiful.
For all the custom assembly for this hack, please see:
https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II/compare/pokered...music
No one needs to ask me up front to use this for their hack,
but you MUST give credit to me for the base ROM when your
hack is announced.
Features:
=========
-Customizable sprite banks
-All sprites from GSC
-Individualized sprite palettes (Pokémon and trainers!)
-Gen. II style 6x6 back sprites
-Several palette corrections (The Pokéball tile is always red.

-Updated font, and other tiles, to match Gen. II
-Inserted the graphics for the GSC battle HUD
-The "Pokémon owned" Pokéball tile in wild battles

It should be noted that this is not related to my personal hack, Pokémon Prototype (although it includes many of the same features).
Any opinion/preference in Prototype, such as choosing a few sprites from other games, is not put into this hack. Every sprite came directly from GSC, with the exception of a few trainer sprites that did not exist in Gen. II. Those sprites are credited accordingly.
If you find any bugs, please let me know. Also, feel free to give any advice or feedback.

Awesome! What a great way to share your knowledge that you gained with the community. I'm sure plenty of people will be very appreciative of your work as much as you are. I think I'll test this out sometime myself since I've always needed a good reason to play gen 1 again. Well now I have a good reason and can say I have plans for this weekend.
Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing this with the community.

Thank you very much! I feel like with all the great work I put into Prototype, I don't want all these features to be only available in that one hack.
I want anyone to be able to appreciate the enhancements whenever they want on a regular Red game. :)

This is pretty cool.
Why thank you! That means alot, coming from you! :)
If you have the time, you should try it out and see if you have any critisism.

Hey, nice work! Going to try this out on its own, just to play Red with the updated graphics and such. I'd say it seems like a good candidate as the rombase for the red-based Secrets and Rumours as well.
I am not very active on this forum. I only pop in from time to time.

Known Bugs:
-The PC Box List lags really bad only the very first time you change boxes on a new save file.
Have you idea what could be the cause?

Um, I'm not quite sure where you got that information, but the original Red is not in black and white. It has always had SGB features, I just expanded the number of palettes programmed into the game and inserted a ton of new graphics along with alot of custom ASM.
But thanks for the compliment!
Nice one!

No... and it's hard to explain what happens exactly. Could you try downloading it and starting a new save file get to a pc and try switching boxes? Once you switch boxes once or use another, older save file, it works just fine. I have no idea why the text boxes lag the first time only. I've tried adding the call further into the code but I can't find the right spot. Perhaps you could help me locate a better offset to add in the code that sends the packet.
And thank you! :)
Impressive, GREAT job! I'm downloading this right away.
Thank you, I'm glad I have a fan! :D

First, thank you for appreciating my hard work! :)
And unfortunately, no. All gameplay is identical to Red, so that kind of data is unchanged. This just overhauls the graphics.
Not only is this an amazing work in itself, the note provided allows for an excellent opportunity to see how it works. Great job!
Thank you! I though it would be worth my while to include all of that since this is open to being used for other hacks. Even though it took all night to organize. :P

Thank you :)
Yeah, I considered porting GSC's tilesets into this hack, but I haven't completely made up my mind yet. I might still include that feature in a future update.
I'll do it if enough people think it's a good idea. What do you all think?
Offline
Hmm. That's definitely not so drastically different. I think it would just be an improvement.
Although I don't know about replaceing the dark rock with the little shrub, like in the third and fourth screenshot.
I can give you the tilesets if you like.
Yeah, part of the problem is I never bothered to learn how to take GSC's tilesets, cause I'm under the impression that they are compressed?

Well those tiles in the original game were not trees :P

This is the 2x2 tile image of a dark rock that you replaced with the little tree.
