Twilight Hacking?

(Not sure which forum I should have put this in...)

Hey, guys! Some of you might remember a forum that an old friend Hat and I administrated a few years ago (in 2009!) called "Twilight Hacking," which was pretty much based around the same thing as this board. It's kind of hazy in my mind but from what I remember, Hat went away and I was too caught up with other stuff IRL to continue with it, so I just ended it. I'm really glad Skeetendo is up to keep the GB/C hacking legacy active, so thanks!

I was just wondering what you guys would think of the whole thing being up and running again? Would anyone join? Would the old admins/mods be up for it? I know these boards are up, but idk, there'd be... some variety..? LOL. There were some good memories on it, and it was pretty active, considering "Our users have posted a total of 1707 messages" and "Most users ever online was 13 on Sun 5 Jul 2009 - 12:33." It was THE place to go, and it would be interesting seeing TWO places to go!

And another thing, Hat also hosted his own separate thing called "Twilight Catacombs," where he hosted a bunch of his handpicked GB/C hacking tools. What do you guys think of that?

Just let me know what you guys think. And this wouldn't be another botched attempt at reviving the forums like the last couple of times :-)

- Mr. Magius

P.S., the ghost of the forum is located here, which is where I'd continue hosting it : http://twilight-hacking.darkbb.com/

Re: Twilight Hacking?

maybe this thread is more appropriate on general discussion?anyway, maybe its a good idea but what other things can we add there?more on gba/nds hacking thingy maybe?uhm, for me this forum is enough and two would be more than enough,i guess?but thats pretty good idea sir,i'm not an original TH forums member so original members can add more comments regarding your idea.

Re: Twilight Hacking?

Thanks for your input, emaj :-)
Yes there will be some GBA/NDS hacking. It'll be a general hack resources forum but with its primary focus on the GB/C hacking community.

It's definitely 'more than enough,' but it gives more resources for users to check as well as another source of promotion for the GB/C hacking community (and some other communities). I also want to focus on hacking other games that we haven't yet. It's a different form of administration as well and will be interesting to see. And since there are no admins/mods it'll be a really open forum to begin with.

Re: Twilight Hacking?

I remember Twilight Hacking, and when Hat nuked it. At the time it was the only decent RBY/GSC hacking board. Immediately after its death there was a rush by the members to grab useful topics from the Google cache and migrate to the Skeetendo proboards. As a result, Skeetendo took over Twilight Hacking’s niche. There were attempts to restart Twilight Hacking, but they never took off, because all the content was already on Skeetendo, and they would have essentially an identical userbase.

When I first proposed migrating Skeetendo from Proboards to my own server, I knew that it had to contain all the old content, or nobody would move. So I put a lot of effort into:

  • Importing all the posts from the existing board

  • Importing all the users from the existing board, and emailing them with details to provide a painless transition

I still think that if I had not done those two things, this board would not have taken off, and we would still be stuck on Proboards. That’s also why I don’t think it would be very useful to start Twilight Hacking again: because its niche is already handled by this board. (Compare with TCRF, which is its own niche: several people here have accounts there, and there is no direct duplication of content even though their niche and our niche are closely related.)

Re: Twilight Hacking?

You remember a lot more than me Marckus, haha! You've done a really good job with this board, importing all the members and the separate forums, and transitioned it very well. Thanks a lot.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Proboards considering I've had a few other great forums using that engine, and it's very user-friendly. And although the jurisdiction of this board is covered and TH would be very similar, TH would have certain things that Skeetendo (if that's what I should be calling this board) would not and also vice versa.

Don't think of it as competition, especially considering you were a member, but just having a separate place to go for users to enjoy GB/C hacking. And considering your knowledge, I'd offer you a higher authority there? And I believe it WOULD be useful to have two places to go; for resources, and there would be a slightly different userbase (albeit many of the same faces), but a different way of organising and administrating everything. Maybe more of a council.

A distant example are the PC and WAH forums: forgetting the language separation, the two boards have nearly the same focus but are distinct from eachother and offer very different things.

Don't worry, I hear what you're saying Marckus and I understand your thoughts. If Twilight Hacking doesn't come out right, I'm all for keeping this as THE face of the GB/C hacking scene.
