[POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

Hello,

well yeah , I stuck at this point. I want to change the name of  the edition in the titlescreen. Where it says "POKéMON Red Edition".
How can I change it to "POKéMON  (something) Edition"?? Would be kool if you help me.

Ps: Yes, before you say something. I downloaded all the tools I need for hacking GB/GBC games. But I can't find out how to change that, lol.

Thanks, Tome-

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

1. Open the rom in TLP
2. Go to 68030 (hex)
3. Change View -> Format -> 1bpp
4. Edit the text.

If you followed the steps I gave you, you will see that the text is a graphic. Remember to change the view to 1bpp instead of the default for this graphic.

Ah yes, found it. But something is confusing me there. It says "RedGreenVersion". Not Red Version. Lol.

True, but only the "Red" and "Version" part are used. the "Green" part is ignored.

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

Okay, everything worked fine. I saved the data for now, when I start the game it only shows "Pur  Edition". I actually edited "Purple Edition" at the Editor. Do not tell me that the red Edition can only read max 3 symbols....

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

Actually, yes, it can only show the original amount of tiles that "Red" used, unless you edit the tile arrangement so that it knows to load more. Unfortunately, I don't have the location of the tile arrangement written down anywhere (I hack Gen II, not Gen I) but I'm pretty sure someone around knows the location of it, and editing tile arrangement isn't very difficult. So if someone else knows the offset, it will be easy to explain how to edit it.

It's also in the disassembly. I remember since I did the Red/Blue differences.

You can try to hide yourself in this world of pretend; when the paper's crumpled up, it can't be perfect again.

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

The tilemap is supposedly at $3DBAB (wrong) (courtesy of Sawakita).

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

Well, Sawakita said something with codes like

ROMF:7c80 3e 01            ld   a,01
ROMF:7c82 ea 0b cf         ld   (cf0b),a

Any idea where to change that? Cause I only see strange graphics @ $3DBAB

Those ROM F:7C80 and ROM F:7C82 are "pointer forms" of two rom addresses.

F:7C80 corresponds to $3FC80 (0xF * 0x4000 + 0x7C80 - 0x4000) and F:7C82 is just two bytes ahead of that, at $3FC82.

The reason why Sawakita wanted to describe the offsets that way is because "pointer form" makes actually a lot more sense when working with asm routines instead of writing the offsets in hexadecimal format, like $3FC80.

Re: [POKEMON R&B] How 2 change the name of the edition in the titlescreen?

That code is totally unrelated to the titlescreen.  I have no idea why are we discussing it, really.

Anyway, the address Sawakita posted appear to be wrong.  He probably just did a hex search for "60 61", but found something else.  I'll have to look for the real address.

Okay.  Fire up your favorite hex editor and jump to $45A1.  You should see the following bytes:
60 61 7f 65 66 67 68 69 50
Those correspond to the used tiles.  (Hence, tilemap.)
Like you noted, the graphics say "RedGreenVersion".  If you compare the tiles and bytes, you can see that 60 is the first one, 61 the second one, 7f is a space, and 65 is the "jump" to the beginning of Version.  This way, you can replace the tiles saying "Green" with anything you want, and use them.  (They are tiles 62, 63 and 64).  50 marks the end of the tilemap.  Since the data after it is unused, you can make it a bit longer, as long as you remember to end it with 50.

I've been too lazy to do this on my own so far, so I appreciate this! I can finally center my custom sub-title on my title screen! :P
