Re: Pokemon Pyrite

In every Secondary Map Header, there is a two-byte pointer to the map's script data.
The rom bank of the map's script is shared with that of the map's Event Data.

Secondary Header structure:
[Border Tile][Heigth][Width][3-byte pointer to map data][Rom bank of Map's Script and Event Data][Map's Script pointer (2b)][Event Data pointer (2b)] + [Connection data (1-49 bytes)]

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

Thanks! I found the secondary map header data in pokecrystal and identified New Bark Town data in a hex editor. It seems simpler than I thought though you never know until you actually start working on it!

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

I decided to upload a new version of the hack that doesn't contain any storyline progress but contains a lot of mechanical additions that make it a lot more accurate compared to what the final version will be. So hopefully, a save file of this new version, will be compatible with the next version(s) I release in the future. I'm doing this in case some people is still downloading the game from the OP but you might as well wait until a new version with more progression in the storyline is released (around September/October).

To know what's new, refer to the quote box in the OP (everything that says *DONE* is new and implemented). You can also explore every cave etc that is reachable before arriving to Ecruteak City (i.e. Rocksmashable paths prior to Ecruteak) because everything has been updated. Just one thing: the game is intended to be played "Battle Mode: SET" (so please, do it!), but it's not forced in this version of the hack (i'll do it when I figure out how). Everything else should be fine and accurate.

As I said, you can also wait for another version with more progress to be released, but if you were going you download the previously listed version, then this one's much better and accurate.

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

Bump due to progress: Ecruteak City, Routes 38 and 39, and surfable routes/caves/paths (that can be accessed right after getting the 4th badge and being able to use Surf) done. Includes wild pokemon, trainers, maps, some events, items, etc. (sorry but no new screenies yet because i have them in another computer)

Also, I have noticed a pretty high amount of downloads of the hack between the two versions I've uploaded; I don't exactly know how many come from this forum (but I calculate that at least must be nearly 500) and how many actually come from members of the forum, but should be a considerable amount I suppose (as long as everybody doesn't download hacks just to forget about it in a second!) . I'd really like to hear some feedback of members that have played this beta of the hack: opinions, suggestions, what you like/don't like (do you like "expert" hacks in general/what would you expect them to have), if you are happy with the difficulty of the (pokemon battles of the) the hack, and if you like/don't like the features/find them appropriate. Also, bug reports if needed, or any kind of innacuracies you find, would obviously be welcome too. Feedback in general would be greatly appreciated!

Bump for updates and progress. New screenshots too. See first post. Removing the download link for now, since I'm constantly editing and adding stuff that affects the early game.

I don't remember at all what the first post used to look like, but I like what I'm seeing now.
Keep up making those small event changes here and there - it will pay off in the end!

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

Why don't you add pokemon from genaration 3

Because I don't want to touch GSC mechanics. If I actually bothered to make sure that something as "superfluous" as for example legal move combinations aren't modified despite all the changes I've done in movesets and egg moves, then you can easily see how important I consider keeping pure GSC mechanics. Obviosuly new gen Pokemon/moves/whatever would completely break what I'm aiming for.

On another note, added a few more screenshots in the first post, nothing to write home about though. As for progress, I'm probably going to get Johto done during this month.

Also looking for a different name for the hack. Was thinking on Pokemon Pyrite since GSC is the mineral generation and Crystal gets its name from Suicune, so I was thinking Pyrite go go well with the Raikou change, since both are sorta yellow. Just came up with that name lol.

It's the same hack, but with a more atractive name! :)

Btw, I have uploaded a video about a run at the Violet Gym. Not made by me but from a friend of me that wanted to test my hack and decided to upload a narrated video. Link in the first post.

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

I watched what you did there with the gym, and the implementation looks pretty good in overall. After all, all that really matters is that you have taken everything in account and players can't get stuck in there.

Guess I'm just nitpicking, but I'd personally probably script it so that the "warp tiles" are taken out with a map's script, like in Indigo Plateau (you could even apply it to your own hack by seeing how those work) if you haven't beaten the leader yet.

But hey, this hack is starting to turn out pretty nice. Looking forward to seeing your further accomplishments.

P.S
That kind of a map's script wouldn't be hard to do at all either!

Put the script pointer in Secondary Header to point to this kind of a structure;

00 01 05 [pointer]

:Pointer ' offset where pointer leads
checkbit1 0x[has leader been beaten]
if false [remove the entrance]

return

:remove the entrance
[script the event here]

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

Thanks for the positive feedback, Miksy! I have already looked at how things work in the Johto League maps, but it's done with triggers and callbacks and that stuff. I think I would be able to make the gym scripts with triggers too, since I have already worked on a couple of minor trigger events. However:

1- I would have to repoint the trigger table and at the moment I don't know how to do that.
2- If I add a trigger and a callback I would have to remake some parts of the script header of each gym (to make space for the trigger/callback definition) and code a trigger event from scratch for a total of 16 maps. While I think I *could* do it, I'm not too familiar with triggers so it would take trillions of hours and work. :P
3- I have already done 7 gyms the way it's shown in the video!

Overall, I'm happy with the result :)

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

Since I haven't posted anything about the hack in a while, I thought I would make a post regarding updates and information.

Johto (including up to elite four) will most likely be finished by the end of this year. I calculate that the hack may be fully finished by the end of Summer 2014, perhaps even earlier.

I may release a beta of the hack once all Johto is finished, since I'm very satisfied with what I have done so far and I don't think anything very relevant about Johto will be changed anymore. I have to think about this though.

There is a new video posted in the first post. It's been there for a while, but since this is the first time I bump this thread since I uploaded the video there's a chance that most of you have not seen it!

I do have some ideas for Kanto. I plan on making the Kanto adventure start from Pallet Town and follow the order of RBY. I also plan on making some kind of Orange Islands (within the Kanto map, most likely between Cinnabar and Pallet Town) where static events of Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno can be found. Mew and Mewtwo will also be found at some point of the Kanto advanture.

I will heavily focus on making Kanto much more competitive without doing 'crazy' things. I will add a bunch of trainers in many places and of course improve existing trainers, gyms, and wild pokemon. Between Johto and Kanto, Pokedex completion will be possible. I might make a Safari Zone with Pokemon but I have yet to think about it. And of course, I will also work on modifying some existing maps like caves and routes the way I've done with Johto, and I'm sure Kanto could benefit from that even more than Johto lol.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope you are all liking how the hack looks like so far! :)

Looks good judging by the screenshots - I'll try to remember to post some feedback later on though.

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

This is cool. There are only a few hacks with Crystal as the base ROM. I'll play it once it 100% finished (I hope it won't take too long, but no rush on it).
Are the names of the regular trainers deleted to add more Pokemon to their team?

I think it'll be great if you can implement the physical/special split like FroggestSpirit did in his hack, but that's just a suggestion.

Re: Pokemon Pyrite

I haven't decided yet and the time will tell, but I plan to make the next release during around next year's summer, with Kanto fully playable. From there, I might work on minor additional features like the battle tower, or I might already start working on another hack, I don't know. All in all, I would consider that it'd be 100% finished in the next release, which would take around six months (if six months is too long or not, that's your take :P)

I think it'll be great if you can implement the physical/special split like FroggestSpirit did in his hack, but that's just a suggestion.

One of the priorities with Pokemon Pyrite was to keep pure GSC mechanics. The physical/special split is one of the last things I would implement!
