Kanto Explorers: The Lost Gem

2mxlrlv.png

Introduction

I've given up on Wisteria, for now. I want to start again, learn from the ground up and build my knowledge of the Red engine. To do this I've decided to create a simple hack that will build this knowledge. The idea came to me when I was thinking about how mysterious and anonymous the character Red is and how we never meet his father or find out much about his family.

Story

The setting is Kanto, around 100 years before Red, Blue and Green set off on their adventures. Red's Great Grandfather is set a task by a mysterious fellow known as Eli, which he comes across in Viridian Forest on his 10th birthday. The task is simple, to retrieve the Genesis Gem from Indigo Lake and bring it back to him. As he journies through Kanto, he notices the changes of the old world to the modern. More Pokemon are appearing and older ones dying out. A new fad known as Pokemon Training Gyms is starting up in the bigger towns. Forests are being destroyed to buid housing for the rising population of people.

Changes in Kanto

- No Pokemon League
- Barely any Gyms
- Indigo Plateau is a lake
- Lavender Town is a cheerful town
- Celedon Mart is in construction
- Pallet Town is a farm
- Safari Zone is a forest
- No Pokemon Professers
- Only 70 known Pokemon

Interesting, looks very promising. And glad to hear that you have not given up on hacking altogether!

This looks pretty good, especially the title screen.
I also watched the video and can't say it was "truly amazing" or anything but I wouldn't expect complete overhauls of scripts in R/B/Y either.
Keep up the good work :)

Oh don't worry. I plan on adding more mind blowing scripts. There maybe some disadvantages with the scripts being written in mainly ASM, but the advantages outweigh them. I don't think G/S/C scripts can manipulate the same amount of data freely as you can using R/B/Y ASM.

For instance, if I wanted, I could cover the whole screen with an image, kinda like the cutscenes in FR/LG, simply by loading chunks of data into VRAM.

The way to go for that in GSC would be to implement an 0C or 0F command. Those will call ASM script anyhow where you can do all things you want to do, but assuring you that nothing keeps running in the background that might screw things up (for instance timing events etc).

Re: Kanto Explorers: The Lost Gem

I'm new around here, but I think this looks pretty cool.

Do you need or want any help? I want to start working on ROM hacking, but would rather devote my time to helping one in progress than making a hack of my own at this point, because well, there are a ton of hacks out there already.

Unless you can help with some ASM, no :P

Small update for you all. Progress is slow but atleast I'm being careful and pre-planning everything this time.

Re: Kanto Explorers: The Lost Gem

I'm not dead, this hack will become the partner game to Wisteria. Instead of two games that are virtually the same, these two will be partnered.
