Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

So I got this idea after watching some Sci-fi Anime called Mahoromatic, Detective Conan, Castlevania and Castle in the Sky. Basically, you're a cadet named Mahko on a Spaceship called Martello. Anyway, the ship is on its way to a planet called Rupia, named after it's queen Rupee. The delivery: A rare jewel called The Dark Crystal. Knowing this, security is heavy. However, the ship being a luxury cruise ship is full of rich civilians, and is susceptible to what they fear most: Pirates. Now, while most of the security guards have firearms, a few have special powers called Summoning, in which they can call forth monsters they have befriended. Mahko is one of these special guards.

Phoenix.pngPhoenixII.png
You start off with the Summoning called "Phoenix/Fenice," A noble bird that can spout flames and burn its enemies to a crisp. These summonings gain levels and grow, and become close to their owners. You can capture more of the summonings by using "Gravine Nets," which is just a glorified Pokéball. The nets have different grades, etc.

The Ship is on its way to its destination, and pirates have come to plunder the ship. They have taken over most of the ship. Your duty is to stop all the pirates and save as many civilians as possible. The ship is big, and you, being a new recruit, don't know it's layout well. You will have to find your way through the maze-like ship and defeat the Pirate King that has taken over the Martello.

Hack of: Pokémon Gold (U)
Author: Squall

Features:
-A unique idea for a Pokémon Hack
-More of a serious RPG theme
-50 Monsters for you to catch and raise (Possibly More)
-Custom Sprites
-Game will be translated into several languages (English, Italian, Romanji Japanese, and eventually Vietnamese)

Characters:

Mahko Kuroyama
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Info: A prodigy in the Space Cadets, Mahko is a young man who surpasses many of his superiors because of his ability to befriend monsters. His parents were kidnapped by Pirates long ago, and he does not know if they are still alive.

Akane Chiba
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Info: A fellow Space Cadet, Akane is a pink-haired airhead who excels at physical combat but lacks in the brains department. She tends to be pretty damn cute, though.

Ryuu Tanaka
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Info: Mahko's childhood friend. They joined the ranks together, and he can also summon monsters.

Hisoka Kanemaru
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Info: Cadet Commander. Son of a rich and corrupt politician, he did not work very hard for his rank. He tends to be arrogant and unfair to his inferiors.

Mei Watanabe
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Info: Daughter of Kurozen Watanabe the Pirate King, she is a nimble little thief who is a nuisance to Mahko several times throughout the game. She isn't exactly on good terms with her dad, but she has her reasons.

Kurozen Watanabe
Age: 52
Gender: Male
Info: Pirate King of The Litora. He is ruthless and greedy, and does not mind breaking the law to get what he wants. He is ironically an overbearing parent to his daughter Mei, and as a result she resents him often.

Q/A:

Q: They can breath in space?
A: Yes. This is fiction, after all.

Q: How many monsters?
A: Fifty. Not including evolutions.

Q: Monsters Evolve?
A: Not necessarily, they just grow older, and gain a new name. (e.g Phoenix -> Phoenix II)

Q: Japanese names?
A: Yes, I wanted this to feel like a true JRPG.

Q: What do you mean by "Custom Graphics?"
A: New tiles, and possibly new overworlds.

Q: Why hack Gold?
A: Why not? It'll be fun to show what I can do with a Pokémon game. Plus I'd like to burn it to a cartridge someday :)

If you'd like to help out feel free to ask here. I will update this thread later.

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

Damn, this sound very nice!
So I assume what has happened before the hack starts is that the Dark Crystal has somehow been acquired and this has "nothing to do with the hack". I'd say, try to make an "intro sequence" in which the player actually sees this happening if you're planning to make the gameplay start at the point you're wandering around in Martello until they're attacked by the pirates.

That would be awesome if I can figure it out. I'm still trying to figure out how I would make an in-game cutscene. Do you know if PKSV is still viable and applicable to G/S hacking? I've been gone for awhile :p

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

This can be done;
1) Once you're warped into your room in the beginning of the game, a script from the map header is called to warp you elsewhere where things that you want to happen, do. You'll have to make the player invisible during that scene in case you don't want him to be there during that cutscene. After this scene is over, the script ends by warping the player to another map etc.
2) Once all those "subscripts" have been gone through, you're warped to your room again and some bit was set during that cutscene part which disables you warping back to the cutscene (which happens in the beginning of part 1 in this example of how to do it).

PKSV is fully compatible with gsc (expect for one phone command that's rarily used but whatever). You'll have to learn hex edit the scripts too to actually make use of PKSV.

All in all, this kind of intro sequence would be a bit tricky to do but can be achieved.

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

Thanks for the feedback Miksy91. Would making the player invisible require some kind of ASM? I have both the RGBDS and GBDK, so I am still learning C and Z80 Assembly, but if there is an easier way I would like to know xD

Also, anyone have any ideas for monsters?

So far I have:
-Phoenix (fire bird)
-Quezacotl (electric bird)
-Siren (mermaid thing that can sing)
-Succubus (woman with devil wings that lures men to their demise)
-Harpy (bird lady)
-Android Z80 (doesn't evolve by leveling, instead is upgraded with items; pun on Z80 Assembly :p)
-Genie (replacement for Celebi, very fat. Think of Dark Cloud's Dark Genie)
-Jack Frost (Shin Megami Tensei reference; look at Tauwasser's avatar and you'll know what I'm talking about)
-Moogle (Final Fantasy reference)
-Deus (it's a divine creature; Deus is latin for God)
-Iblis (arabic for devil)
-Tentaculus (Space tentacle alien)
-Glenhorn (Some space dragon I drew at school, lol)
-Machina X ("evolves" by adding parts to it)
-Machina Δ ("evolves" by adding parts to it; not sure if the delta symbol is in the font, if not I'll add it in)
-Machina O ("evolves" by adding parts to it)
-Machina □ ("evolves" by adding parts to it)
*The above four are a reference to the buttons on Playstation controllers

Any are subject to be deleted. I'd like some suggestions because I don't want to be too cliché by adding bats and rats; generic RPG monsters.

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

Well about making the main character invisible, you could access this in quite many ways:

1) Replace his sprite in VRAM with 00's (making him look invisible). The problem with this option is that only some emulators (related to VRAM's inaccessibility I guess?) can show it the way you want (I'm actually using these kind of hacks in Dark Energy still...)
2) Use a hide person command for the sprite 0x0 (making player disappear). This may or may not work. If you want to warp to another map from the script called from the map header like I advised to do, it might work but not in a script that would end and you could walk around in that map later.
3) Set the byte in 0xD1FF accordingly to the sprite you want to be displayed as the player. That is normally set to 00 making the game think it's sprite data is located between 0x8000-0x80BF and 0x8800-0x88BF in VRAM. This may not make much sense but try setting that byte to a multiple of 0xC and see what happens (00, 0C, 18, ...)

I've got really nothing to say about the monsters or ideas related to them, at least not for now.
Quezacotl is a win though ;)

You could use more mythological creatures (Ifrit, Gilgamesh, Bahamut, Leviathan...) like Square-Enix/Sqaresoft does :P

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

If I do add new types, it will be Light and Space types. Possibly Sound for something like Siren. I honestly am not good enough at ASM to do it on my own, so I don't know if they will be added.

Also, thanks for the feedback Miksy91 and Gallego13.

@Miksy91 I will try out the 3 methods in separate ROMs to get a feel of what I want/need.

@Gallego, perhaps. I thought of adding some Norse gods such as Odin. Quezacotl, Phoenix, and Siren would be some of those mythical creatures. Iblis is basically what I imagine to be Ifrit, maybe like a crossover with Diablos.

@Jay I plan on adding several over time. Probably only 15-30 will be available in the first Beta. Also, I have made no such hack xD

Also, to anyone who is waiting for some spritework for this project, I'll get to work on it after my shop requests are finished.

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

This looks really cool! However, is "Deus" male, female, or genderless? If it's male, the name is right, but if it's female it would be Dea and if it's genderless it would be Deum. I just noticed that you were calling it "it" rather than "he."
Edit: A piñata would be a funny creature to add. It could have moves of three completely unrelated types, or it could be the "Magikarp of the game" and know Splash, Tackle and maybe Flail.

I haven't been on this site for a very long time. Sorry about that! >.<
I am probably not going to get very far in the ROM projects that I've started, at least until I get more experience hacking, so I apologize.

@Electrike Inc., I like that idea. Maybe it could be like an easter egg or something completely optional that you have to go out of your way of getting.

@Solar, Thanks for the link. Some of the ideas in there are pretty cool like the Mapinguari.

Phoenix in its chick form. It's supposed to look slightly awkward as if it were learning how to walk correctly.
Phoenix.png

It "evolves" twice. One adult form and an elder form.

Re: Mahko: The Pirate King of Litora

Sounds good!

It would be epic if you created a battle mechanism for checking whether you've phoenix (not fainted) in your party and it would heal your fainted party members randomly when a battle starts or something. Just an idea here, would be difficult to implement but if you ever get your skills that far, something you may want to consider doing.

When the game is "finished," I will probably end up always adding onto it just because I like to be professional. So that could be possible when I learn more about the Z80 Assembly language.

2nd one looks like your modified version of 巴洛特 (BāLuòTè) (Ballot in English), but I like the way you changed him to fit for your game.

Okay, so I came up with the modified names for Pokeballs (Gravine Nets):
Pokeball -> GravNet
Great Ball -> Shock Net
Ultra Ball -> Frost Net
Master Ball -> Binding Net (there are actually 3 of these in-game.)
Speed Ball -> Swift Net
Friend Ball -> Cozy Net
Heavy Ball -> Steel Net
Lure Ball -> Fish. Net
Level Ball -> Moldy Net
Moon Ball -> Gala Net
Love Ball -> Heart Net
*Park Ball -> Null (not used ingame)

Also, the item Upgrade will be called "Mech.Pt"

Currently at school so I can't post my game script at the moment. Will do so later.
