Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Here is a link to Giegue's Master Hacking Guide. It covers Pokemon Red through Pokemon Crystal. It is incomplete as it is a bit old, but it covers the format of several types of data in the rom and will allow you to edit things such as evolutions and when pokemon learn attacks and things like that. Hopefully it will be a help to you.

A word of warning to anyone using this guide:

It is outdated, incomplete, and often inaccurate. For example:

  • Provides two table files. The first one has two lines that aren’t Thingy table format (*55 and 00/). The second one doesn’t work for the listed game, Pokemon Crystal — the values it provides for the letters are completely inaccurate.

  • When talking about monster encounters, he states that they have a five-byte header “usually ending with XXYY191919″. XXYY is actually the map number, and the 19s are encounter ratios for the three times of day.

  • The first byte of attack data is not the attack number, but the animation number.

  • The RBY attack numbers from 0A–0F are missing.

  • The stats data he lists are incomplete (GSC) or incorrect (RBY), and the location he gives (GSC) is wrong.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Just making sure: Is the move list in this for RBY correct? I'm asking because 0A-0F are skipped, and I want to be sure that it was Game Freak's doing, and not a mistake by Giegue.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

You know, I'll have to check that out when I'm back on my other PC and can look at my documentation to let you know. Anyone who can double check this offhand want to comment and beat me to it?

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

I'm getting a feeling that it may be wrong. I just wrote a Lua script to tell me the hex (in decimal) of trainers Pokemon when I battle.

The trainer in Brock's Gym has a Diglett and a Sandshrew that both have 10 (0A in hex) as one of their moves, which should be Scratch. Scratch doesn't appear in the RBY move list, but it does appear in the GSC move list, at position 0A.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Yep, you're right. But I wouldn't copy them all from gold by default, as some moves moved around.

here is another doc that will help with red, I forget who made it (my pdf viewer is acting up at the moment) but it covers a lot about red, some of which is covered by giegue and some is explained a bit more.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Yeah, that megadoc has another incomplete list in it, but it does have 0A-0F. Any chance someone has a correct and complete one?

I think I'm going to retype that megadoc into a .txt file, that way it can be searchable.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Alright, I just took the list at $B0000 and made it into a list.

I think this is a complete and correct one. It matches up with Giegue's most of the way through, but has all of the moves he missed.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

AFAIK the move list from RBY is a subset of the move list from GSC, i.e. the order is the same, but RBY only goes up to Struggle.

edit @Mateo: Wait, did you say some are moved around? Which ones specifically?

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Actually, I think I might have been mistaken when I wrote that. Looking back over it now I don't see anywhere that they are out of order. Probably ended up accidentally skipping a line somewhere. It happens when browsing a long list.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Since the data on pokemon stats is incomplete and incorrect, is there another document that fully documents all of the stats we can post instead?

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

For the real Pokemon stats, Tauwasser made a nice and clear article at RHWiki. Unfortunately, it's in German but Babelfish translates most of it really good. (except for the last part, which covers the data for Pokemon eggs)

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

You know, this tutorial was a great help in getting me to starting hacking Pokemon. It just seems to have a bad rep as being outdated.

Why don't we try writing an updated version? We could correct some mistakes, add updates (Pokemon graphics ;)), and pull from other resources (Bulbapedia, for example).

I could easily get started on Generation I. Generation II isn't as much my cup of tea though. Only where it's similar to Generation I, and I know where the offsets are. For an example of that, see my Pokedex by selecting Gold/Silver version.

By the way, I didn't check the linked versions, but I have version 1 and version 1.7. Is 1.7 the newest?

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

I like this idea. We might want to contact geigue, or we could create it as a spinoff and credit him for the original.

I wonder if Giegue is still around. His website is still up. Maybe I'll try emailing him when the lazy gets over.

Re: Giegue's Master Hacking Guide

Forgot to mention. I shot him an email, but I got the generic "email couldn't be sent, server error" thing. I also added him on AIM, and only checked for about 5 minutes, but I'm starting to think his internet presence might be non-existent anymore.
