This is located from byte b830d to b83dd in the ROM map of Crystal. Copied from goldfinger (in decimal).

So the thing is, I think this is related to headbutt encounters. Numbers like 21, 23 163, 165, 167, 204 and 214 all refer to pokemon that can be found in headbutt trees. (spearow ekans hoothoot ledyba spinarak pineco heracross). Before I made this post I pretty much had no clue about how it worked (some 10s and 15s can be mistakened with caterpies and beedrills, although on the other hand, these numbers were probably the reason i could find this when searching for caterpie's and beedrill's offsets among others!). After arranging it though, I think it might be like this: for example in the first layer: 50 refers to the encounter % and 21 and 10 to the pokemon, 15% for pokemon #214 and #10, 15% for #214 and #10 again, 10% for 190 and 10, and twice 5% for pokemon 190 and 10. And that's it. I get a total of 100%. But really not sure at all. Can someone confirm?

And in the case it works that way, I've heard that there are two types of trees (normal and special or something). Any idea of how to know which layer(s) refer to which type of trees and to which place(s)?

EDIT: I'm thinking some bytes may have something to do with whether the wild pokemon is sleeping or not?

You've got the structure right, but it doesn't seem to start at $b830d. The pointer table begins at $b82e8 and the encounter tables at $b82fa. It looks like it only uses every other table but there is probably another pointer table somewhere.

They don't. The tables for sleeping monsters are elsewhere:

SleepingTreeMonNiteTable: ; 3eb5d
db CATERPIE, METAPOD, BUTTERFREE, WEEDLE, KAKUNA, BEEDRILL, SPEAROW, EKANS, EXEGGCUTE, LEDYBA, AIPOM, $ff
; 3eb69

SleepingTreeMonDayTable: ; 3eb69
db VENONAT, HOOTHOOT, NOCTOWL, SPINARAK, HERACROSS, $ff
; 3eb6f

SleepingTreeMonMornTable ; 3eb6f
db VENONAT, HOOTHOOT, NOCTOWL, SPINARAK, HERACROSS, $ff
; 3eb75

Re: GSC headbutt pokemon? Not sure. Need help please!

Oh, yes, now that I check it, I see it starts at b82e8, which means there are 12 layers which make a lot more sense.

I guess each two layers refer to the same area(s), which one layer representing normal trees and the other special trees. I think it's the most logical possibility after seeing the table.

Which I still can't find is the byte that sets the level at 10 =/... Any ideas?

Thanks!

Every third byte is the level. The Rock Smash encounters are also included here which makes 13 sets of data.

Relevant code is here (normal trees): http://pastebin.com/cBzU2Dk1
