Hey I got another question. I'm still working on Pokemon Gold.
My next goal was to add Lance in New Bark Town and have him tell you a joke.
Using JohtoMap I added a new people event for New Bark Town and selected the new person and positioned him on the map. Next I went to select his picture. I didn't know what the number for Lance's picture was, but knowing that Lance's character was at the Lake of Rage I opened that map and clicked on his picture and saw that it was picture 30.
So I went back to New Bark Town and gave my new character the picture 30, but he wasn't Lance, in fact he was still the default player's sprite. What gives?
Doing a little testing I have come to the conclusion that the pictures for characters on a map are not global in nature, they seem to be specific for that map. For instance I could not go to the Lake of Rage map and add a new character and give it a picture number that isn't already used in the map.
Am I right on this conclusion? If so, can someone give me a few pointers in the right direction as to how I might be able to add a picture to a map's data(such as Lance's to New Bark Town)?
Or did I make another simple silly mistake?
So I would go about this by editing that spriteset of New Bark Town by replacing a sprite that is unneeded with Lance's sprite?
Edit: Saw your edit (lol) I think I have an idea of what needs to be done now.

Well New Bark Town's sprites sheet had two of the same sprites in it, picture 4 which is your rival. I replaced one of the duplicates with Lance's picture number and it works like a charm.
Thanks for the information!
As Johtomap shows it, the last sprite in the spritesheet doesn't belong to the spritesheet (it's probably the first one in the spritesheet following that one). The first 9 do and are sprites of which facing can be changed from "1" or "6" to something else and the remaining two (often item balls, berry trees or standing pokemon) cannot.
* Anytime a sprite not on the spriteset is set, it will display as the default/character's sprite.
That explains why your new Lance looks like Hiro/Gold.
Works for maps with types "Town", "Route". In indoor maps (including caves), the sprites that appear there don't have to belong to the spritesheet.
