Pokemon Red after story

I thought... Playing through GSC and the remakes were pretty fun. This was probably because of the music... the fact that kanto returned... it just had this feel to it that a lot of other pokemon games seem to miss for some reason. I was thinking... What if we tried to give Pokemon Red and Blue this treatment?
My Idea is, the ordinary Pokemon Red/Blue we all know and love, but after you beat the Elite 4, the S.S. Anne returns, giving you a quest to start in Olivine city. Now... before you say.. hey, I can just play GSC, this one will have some things that grab your interest (I hope):
-You will be visiting (hopefully) all of Johto, but keep in mind, it will be 3 years prior to GSC.
-I have did a bit of research on the web, and Bulbapedia, and some events might be based off the manga.
-This will be roughly the time that Brendan's family (from RSE) move to Hoenn ~hint hint
-With every time gap, and without the introduction of dark and steel types, some gyms will be different
-Falkner recently took his fathers place at the gym in GSC, so Walker can be it's leader
-Bugsy, being really young, might not have been a leader yet
-It was said that whitney was also new, so she might not be here
-Jasmine was said to have previously raised Rock type (like Brock)

I have done some remixing of Pokemon songs, and I would like to remix Johto's music in a way similar to Kanto's in GSC. I have the trainer battle here I did a while back.
I've become pretty fluent in ASM, and have even made a few tools to help me hack various ROMs.
I would like to know what you guys think though... Plausible? worth it? ideas? or wanting to help if I start this?

Re: Pokemon Red after story

I've to say that I've never been a fan of remakes and games that take place in known areas. If you make the hack way different from what to expect, I'll change my mind about this one though.

One thing though, which rom will this hack be based on? If you're going to include whole Johto, it would make sense to make it a GSC hack but if only partly, a one of RBY would also work. If you're going with GSC, it would make sense if you started off somewhere else than in New Bark Town this time.

Re: Pokemon Red after story

I understand that aswell. I suppose that's why the 3 years prior thing drew me in a bit, because it could be a lot different. I'm kind of leaning towards RBY though for the base... because if I plan on leaving the original Kanto story intact, but kind of remaking Johto, I won't have to worry about recreating RBY in GSC. I might try making it compatable with RBY save files, just so if you have beaten the original, you don't have to again just to get to Johto.

Re: Pokemon Red after story

What about Town Map? Are you planning to add a support for Johto to it? Also, I think there are only 20-30 unused maps in RBY you can use for Johto but I've a feeling you've already taken these in consideration while planning the idea.

Re: Pokemon Red after story

I would have to say that it makes more sense to use Gold or Silver as the base. If you did, you would only have to modify the Kanto and Johto already in the game. If you used Red or Blue, you would have to create the Johto from scratch. And like Miksy said, there are only 29(?)* unused map id's in RB, so that doesn't leave much room for adventure when you beat the game.

At the same time, I admit I really like the sound of RB save-file compatibility.
And either way, I support this :)

*So I believe there are a total of 33 usuable map id's.
-There are the 22 unused maps mixed throughout all the working map id's that koolboyman has covered.
-Then there are map id's F9-FF that come after the last used map.
-And then there are 4 id's that are copies of another map. (koolboyman stated there are 6, but I can only find 4. In his list he made of every map id, the clone maps are labled "COPY OF:" so what probably happened was while he was tallying up the copies, he counted the two maps labled "Copycat's house" by mistake.)

Re: Pokemon Red after story

Thank you for those events :) I was thinking that if I can find some unused data, I could have the game check a bit when loading maps to tell if you are in Kanto, or Johto. That way, I shouldn't need to worry about map limitations. GSC is roughly twice the size of RBY, meaning that I could technically copy a lot of the data to new banks, and say for example... map 00 being pallet town in RBY, if it sees that the Johto bit is set, it could jump to another bank that would still load 00, but that map would be hacked to be New Bark Town. I'm thinking of adding in the gender choice at the beginning... but the main reason I'm leaning more towards RBY, is that with GSC, I'd need to re-insert all the text, music, sprites, edit some maps, and all the other events. But I don't need the events from GSC, like your rival meeting up with you, the radio tower, etc because it's a new story. I'll probably finish the color hack first, and use that if I go with RBY, because it gives me switchable RAM banks to work with (and adds color). But if I encounter too many issues, I probably will go to GSC.

Sounds good, I like the choice of a RBY hack more anyways :)
