Thanks for the compliment! And yeah, I've read you have an older phone that can't do big downloads. Can't you download regular Red or Blue? Because this file is no bigger. And Red and Blue is as small as you get.

A cool-looking Cubone you've got there :)

Did you think about changing your nickname to match with the style of "presents" ? Either way, a nice intro screen.

Thanks! I devamped it from something I got off Google Images which was probably a HGSS overworld sprite or something, I don't know. :p

Yeah, i definitely intend on doing that, this is just a placeholder. And I'm not too good at artsy stuff from scratch.. :p

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

I noticed you prefer the palette of the Machoke you gave instead of the original one, right?

Here is it:

FF 7F  95 6A  DD 18  00 00

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Not yet, but I'll tweak also other Pokemon, I already did it with Zubat, Golbat, Porygon, Ivysaur, Geodude & Golem. Soon I'll try also with Bulbasaur, Charmeleon, Venusaur, Magmar & Many other.
I'm trying giving them a feel like RSE rather than GSC, this is why there are some differences, I'll apply this also to the 2nd and 3th generation pokemon as well.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Sounds good, just let me know. :)
I'd only be interested in seeing the palettes updated in my hack for Ivysaur, Venusaur, Machop and Machamp (although I'm pretty satisfied with Machop, but I am open to seeing an even better palette)
You could consider using my Bulbasaur sprite:
yaybulba.png
It's more than just an updated palette, it's also redrawn a bit.
I'm glad you're mixing up a lot of the palettes though to make it more different from the Graphics Patch and Prototype. :)

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Yes, that pic is better, could I use it?

You're right also about palette differences, I think our hacks won't be too similar between each other, also because I based mine on the very first graphic patch but I decided to change palettes a lot to make it different.
Could this sprite (after the compression) simply replace the older sprite of Bulbasaur or I had to add as new?

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Today marks my one year anniversary of joining Skeetendo!
And with that, I have a new title screen:

CVLGfjw.png

80C: Yes you can use those sprites. IIRC the front sprite is smaller than the original front sprite that's in the graphics patch and the back sprite is bigger than what's in the graphics patch but all together the two sprites end up being smaller by a few bytes so they'll fit without repointing everything else.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Ok, so it's safe - I guess that I could know the adress looking at the 1Bth byte in the base stats for the Bank and then look at the words stored in the base stats for the adress.

What about the replacing & recoloration of the new Logo that appears instead of Nintendo in the second intro screen?

1Cth byte
EDIT: well unless you are saying that the first byte is the 0th byte. I just want to avoid confusion.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

yes, I meant 1st byte as the 00th byte, I picked the numeration used in Bulbapedia.

Oh, almost forgot, the mewtwo in the center of the titlescreen looks very cool, because it seems a lot more a 2nd Gen hack rather than a 1st one (it reminds me the title screen of S&R because there's only 1 pokemon).
Did you deactivated also the cyclical Pokemon shifting in the title screen?

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Actually no, the pokemon still cycle and now each pokemon loads its own palette when it comes onto the screen!

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

The player was taken off because his palette doesn't load properly because it interferes with Pokemon palettes or there's another motivation?

And how to colore the pokemon that cycle, I'm really interested - is there an asm routine that I should add with BGB Debugger?

Actually I decided to take off the trainer first and center the pokemon, and then I realized I could give them their appropriate palettes without a problem.

This feature is for Prototype. I'm not going to hand you everything I do. There are several asm routines involved in this. But you're better off learning asm for yourself and finding what creative things you can do on your own. Try learning asm and then read through the readme of the graphics patch and see if all of the routines in there make sense, that should help confirm you know what you've learned.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Ok, I'll try by myself, I'll learn asm when I finished study and after certain months I'll start by my own.
Maybe I'll could be able to color both the trainer & the pokemon that cycle.

Hey thanks a lot! :)

80C wrote:

Good. Although, this task is a little complex to be your first goal with asm. You should think of other creative things to do with your hack as practice and you'll be able to do this with time. :)

80C wrote:

This is actually a bad idea, unlike CGB games, SGB games don't colour tiles but instead colour coordinates of the screen, so while the Pokemon is passing behind the trainer, they will uncontrollably be using the same palette.

Yeah, you're right, it is where I got the fundamental ideas. But this story is made even bigger so that it involves travelling across the entire region!

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Actually, for the title screen, my brother's looking into writing an 8 bit arrangement of the tv shows original Pokemon theme! :D

Kind of like this, but for real!

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Besides that, all the custom music will be all original music by my brother. The short song that plays when Gengar and Nidorino are fighting will probably remain the same. Other "one time only" songs are gonna stay the same. We're only dedicating all the time in the complicated process of writing/inserting music for the tracks that are repeated often like OW songs for towns, routes and dungeons and battle music.

Haha, what do you do in that game?

Miksy91 wrote:

Thanks! Some examples of songs we won't be replacing are the songs that play when certain characters do things in the overworld, such as Oak taking you to his lab, the rival walking on screen, and the guy that walks you to Brock's gym in Pewter. Another song that is staying is the song in the Casino, cause it's one of those "one time only" songs and you won't hear it again. And besides, that song is already awesome!
