Breeding - Egg moves data

Hatched baby Pokemon can learn moves their parents never learn. For example, breeding female Vulpix with male Stantler can give you a baby Vulpix who can use Hypnosis (no normal Vulpix can learn this move). TMs or normally learnt moves can also be passed down.
More information can be found here: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Egg_move
We are concentrating on Egg Moves - the way to give your Pokemon unusual moves. I know most of you hackers won't even care about Daycare centers, but I find it interesting and useful.

There is a pointer table beginning on 0x239FE. Egg moves table begins on 0x23BF4.

0x239FE points to Bulbasaur (08:F47B). Next four bytes are: 3C 7E 3C 7E - two bytes are for Ivysaur and two for Venusaur. They point to offset 0x23e3c, which value is FF. FF means "stop", so this means they do not learn any egg moves. Since you can't hatch evolved Pokemon, this is pretty obvious why it is made this way. If you want a Pokemon learn no egg moves, give it pointer 3C 7E (e.g. Magikarp, Caterpie, Gengar, Voltorb, Zapdos)

Time for some real example - we want to see what moves baby Tangela (#114, 72hex) can learn. So we go to offset [ 0x239FE + (0x72 - 1) x 2 ] = 0x23AE0. The pointer is 08:EF7C and leads us to offset 0x23CEF:

AF 5D 48 73 85 FF

The bytes represent hex numbers of moves: Flail, Confusion, Mega Drain, Reflect, Amnesia and FF meaning stop (this reminds me of DNA sequence, with FF being the stop codon lol).

If we wanted to give Tangela a new egg move - for example Hypnosis - we should repoint its data to the end of table - there is 0x1C2 of unused data. You have to make sure Tangela has a matching Pokemon which could teach its offspring Hypnosis - in this case, male Exeggcute will do the job. You can also only change any of these moves into Hypnosis and not repoint data at all.

Re: Breeding - Egg moves data

Interesting to note: In G/S, Staryu has egg moves for Aurora Beam, Barrier, and Supersonic, but these are impossible for it to learn because Staryu is genderless and can only breed with Ditto. (These were removed in Crystal.)

Also, in G/S several Pokémon have egg moves of Charm, Steel Wing, Sweet Scent, or Lovely Kiss. These were also removed in Crystal, because they’re TMs and are already passed through breeding.

Nice job posting this. I'll see about updating my Pokemon editor to allow editing this pointer as well when I get around to it.

Huh? Charm and Lovely Kiss have never been teachable through TMs.

Hm, you’re right. I have no idea why Charm was removed as a breedable move in Crystal (for some Pokémon: Nidoran♀, Meowth, Ponyta, and Eevee can still learn Charm, but Bulbasaur, Snorlax, and Oddish can’t). Maybe nothing else in their egg group can learn it so there’s no way to pass it down?

Smoochum was the only Pokémon that learned Lovely Kiss through breeding, but it can’t in Crystal. I don’t know why that is, since Smoochum doesn’t learn it through levelup (Jynx learns it at level 9). This seems to mean that breeded Smoochum/Jynx can never learn Lovely Kiss in Crystal.
