Private Messages?

Basically, to talk about things that really don't need a topic. Email is rather inefficient. Either that, or could we at least have an IRC channel somewhere?

Re: Private Messages?

I agree. I don't look at my emails for months at a time.

Re: Private Messages?

Which is funny because I was about to email you specifically but figured if you checked your emails as often as I check mine, then you'd never get it...

Re: Private Messages?

I'm supporting this idea because I mostly use secondary email accounts for forums (there is always a chance that the server get hacked). I don't think that implenting a pm system would affect the server traffic that much

Re: Private Messages?

I also think that is a good idea.
In the community I come from there are PMs and Profile Comments (like the comments in Facebook Wall) and they're very useful. I highly recommend it.

I'm a fan of this idea as well. Hopefully IIMarckus will be onboard.

If he's onboard for the idea and not the programming, I can always help him. I should get my own FluxBB set up somewhere so I can learn about the internals of it...

Where do you get that idea from?

  • Email is centralized. I am a member of dozens of forums, but only have one email address. Heck, on every forum I set email notifications on private message anyway; without it I would never notice a PM on the less active boards.

  • I can get emails on my desktop or my phone.

  • I can attach files to emails.

  • I can sign and encrypt emails.

  • I can send emails directly from the board interface.

  • I can keep emails in a threaded conversation. Most PMs are standalone (even with a Re: in the subject, you can only view one at a time).

  • Email conversations can be between more than just two people.

  • With email I can contact anybody, not just members of this board.

What advantages do private messages provide? PMs and email are both asynchronous, so how can one be more “efficient”?

I have no interest in maintaining an IRC channel myself, but if you’re willing to do it, I would definitely hang out there. That would be very useful.

Re: Private Messages?

IIMarckus does have a point. I get emails to my phone as well, so I am much more likely to see them in a timely manner, however if I get them at an inopportune time (such as when I am in class, at church, driving, etc.) I will often forget to reply to them later, whereas PMs I will see when I am on the board and more likely to be able to reply. I think it really just comes down to a matter of personal preference. For example, until I got a blackberry I checked my email very infrequently because I didn't receive a lot of emails, but now I have it sent there so I check it often. Others might be in the boat I was in before, where they check it much less frequently than they check the board.

Basically, I can see both sides.

I guess.

But that of course will mean that having a PM system would be advantageous.

Does it matter what server? Would you endorse it as the official board IRC?

And would Mateo be willing to help me maintain it?

I still don’t see it.

As official as anything is, I guess. We’re nothing but a collection of people.

A collection of people where some are more equal than others, and some have server access. Basically to remind people to go there, I was hoping you'd add a link in the navbar and maybe post a thread about it somewhere.

And does it matter what server? Is nucleus.kafuka.org okay?

Navbar link? I don’t see why not. Just make a thread and I’ll sticky it.

Sure.

You should still do that. To remind people it exists. ;)

Also I'd like to restate that I feel PMs are better than emails. Like Pia Carrot and probably many others, I often don't check my emails. Plus, it makes sense to have PMs tied to the board because, for example, if I asked someone to help me with something, and I send it in a PM, that means that when they read it, they're already visiting the board, which likely means they have the time to help with a question or have their resources open or whatnot. It just makes sense to keep that sort of stuff together.

Plus, so far, everyone has agreed.

Re: Private Messages?

[01:23:17] IIMarckus email has features that PMs don't provide
[01:23:38] stag019 not if you do it right
[01:23:48] IIMarckus oh sure
[01:24:21] IIMarckus so you want me to design a pm system that can do fulltext search, attach files, cc and bcc, and threaded conversation?
[01:24:31] IIMarckus i'll get right on that, thanks
[01:24:54] stag019 if you'd like, i will
[01:25:22] IIMarckus i'll put leave it to you then
[01:25:41] IIMarckus make a fluxbb mod that can do all that, and i will add it
[01:25:59] IIMarckus in the meantime i'll be doing something that's not reinventing the wheel
[01:26:01] stag019 but will you?
[01:26:14] IIMarckus will you make a mod?
[01:26:21] stag019 ....maybe

So there may be hope. This was after a long conversation about it though. :P
