Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

I realize I've been off for a couple of weeks. I've given myself a break from rom hacking. Mainly because connections being a pain in my backside(Cerulean City, Oh God....). And I haven't worked on anything in about 2 weeks..besides getting into trouble on forums(only Pokecommunity, because the mods there...make me wanna wring their necks) than there is rom-hacking community or whatever, got banned from there for posting my politics. The truth kills people...I know :) Anyway...on topic.

For about 6 hours, I've been trying to come up with something for a Dragonball game. Which engine to use, if I want it to be an RPG or fighting system. Today, it's been decided.

I tried Game Maker, and I can do a lot with it I guess(it's superb in editing images without losing quality!), but it takes coding to do textboxes...something I think should already been implemented. I didn't really feel like learning the language because I'm lazy. And RMXP(in my opinion) sucks!(besides the fact of image quality). I've decided on using RPG Maker 2003. It's always been my favorite. I'm still debating on rather if I should make it fighting or an RPG. It may have a mix of both. It would be difficult to incorporate a fighting system with it using events. Too many events would cause a slow down.

I've pretty much got all the sprites I need to use, and I've got some pictures for portraits. Sound data and other little things I have too. For the moment, I've been only testing on what I'm capable of with my limits and the programs. I don't have any shots to show, but in the coming days, there will be updates. I know this is different than the average everyday Pokemon thread...but after hacking Silver for a month...I'm tired of Pokemon! Dragon Ball has always been my main thing. This isn't the first time I worked on such a project. I've had a few in the past, my recent one, a Dragon Ball game..got erased when my PC fell victim to a virus...I was....very sad. I worked hard on it and the battle system was pretty damn well. But since I'll be getting a Terabyte external drive soon, that'll make things easier for me.

Dragon Ball Kai: Saiyan Royale is a game that will focus on the story of Dragon Ball Z, starting with Bardock's encounter with Frieza. I don't know where it will end yet. The sprites that I'll be using are in a format of Street Fighter, so you can expect some great detail with the sprites. many of the battle areas will be areas from previous games like that on the SNES or GBA.

I've decided to go with a fighting/action rpg approach. There is no leveling up or adventure mode, but there will be mini games at certain areas as you progress through the game. I had pictures for the attacks to make it look more....artistic? But using them would cause a lot more coding on my end as I would have to code things for each attack causing me to have more events which could cause slow down, so I decided to use the built-in choices system to make it easier, plus it goes along well with my meteo combinations that you could do to increase the attack chosen!

Sorry for the huge screenshots, this is why spoilers would come in handy.

Stay tuned for updates.

Recommended Requirements:
433 MHz Pentium 2 Processor
Windows 98,2000,XP(haven't been tested on Vista and Windows 7, use at your own risk!)
100 MB of free space
512 MB RAM

Make sure you have the Media Player codec pack installed since this game has AVI files that play. If you don't have these, the game will not be able to play any further until you do. Alas, I take NO responsibilty should anything happen to your PC, play at your own risk! There are no dangers that I'm aware of.

FAQ:
Q: How did you stumble upon the complex combinations for the battle system?
A: To be honest, it was done by mistake. I thought it was a bug in the system as I wanted the "complex combinations" to be separate attacks(which they still are but if you hurry with the follow up attack it will add to it.), but then I noticed I could use it to my adventage. I must say, to stumble upon such a system by accident is rare. :)

Q: I get an error "Can't read video file" or something similar.
A: The reason is because you don't have the AVI codecs installed. It also requires the FFDSHOW plugin. The RAR file that you downloaded should have the codec pack in it. Install them!

Q: How do I figure out the combo sequences for the attacks?
A: Look at the skill list for the character by pressing ENTER. Or, you can view the bottom of this README!!!.

Q: The game is a bit slow and the attacks take forever to launch.
A: Sorry, but that means your PC won't be able to handle it well. This is because the game plays as well as the PC it was worked on. If the PC in question is better then the PC the game was worked on, then it will play even better, and may even appear to be a bit faster.

Q: Is there a time limit for entering the combos?
A: Not if you're inserting the keys for the original attack chosen, however, if you go for the combo combination, then there will be a time limt--and it's only about 5 seconds. However, you can interupt that combo and go straight for the original attack, this will use no KI for the combo combination, but it won't add much damage either, but it will combine with the original attack. Now, if you let the combo attack finish and hurry up with the original attack keys, than you will use more KI but you will also inflict more damage. Use the time limit wisely.

SKILL LIST
=============================================================================================================================================

BARDOCK:
High Speed Rush
Down, Left

Combo Combination of High Speed Rush
Down, Up. If you want to follow up with the High Speed Rush, press the correct keys, if you don't then you will only do this attack.

Soaring Phalax
Left, Right, Left

Combo Combination of Soaring Phalax
Down, Right. If you want to follow up with the Soaring Phalax, press the correct keys, if you don't then you will only do this attack, it can be interupted to insert the Soaring Phalax keys, it won't use any KI for the combination, but it won't do much damage either. However, Soaring Phalax will still do it's appropiate damage. Use the 5 seconds wisely.

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

Sounds great so far, I'm taking offense to your comment on RMXP though >:L Hopefully VX Ace will have a "loophole"to paying soon if you know what I mean...

It's sad Frieza never gets any love. I mean in Budokai 2 he raped and pillaged with the fact he got an extra life with the metal frieza capsule. Guhh. Looking forward to this, I'm more of a Dragonball guy but Z is da shizzle as well,

With Bro love,
Pia Carrot.

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

Thanks for the reply.

The reason I said it sucks is because of the DBS system. I'm too lazy to code an animated turn based system...something that should have already been implemented. I mean really...who the hell would use the current one? It sucks! I found the GUI to be better though..which of course it would be. But I use Cheery's Rm2k9 GUI for rm2k3 and it adds some good features, like coloring the code system for events to make them easier to see and stuff like that.

Anyway, I've decided that the game will go up to the end of the Frieza Saga. This is because the game would big a huge file download since the game is basically done with pictures and key combinations. It will also use avi files for certain scenes, so folks should have the correct codecs installed(ffshow or whatever, I'll add that here when I release an alpha). Each game that will be released will go up to a certain point. All Dragon Ball fans will like this :D. So far, I'm working on "tutorial mode" and trying to get a feel on how I'm going to work the system. I can't do a fighting game, rm2k3 is just too limited for that, but I can make it feel like a action rpg game, the player will get to input certain combo commands right before the player attacks the opponent.

The Alpha will have the tutorial mode in a scene with Bardock and Dodoria after, so stay tuned!(the 24th deadline of screenshots may be delayed...)

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

If you wanted a fighting game you would be better off with Fighter Maker 2002 or Mugen anyway. I can't wait to beat the crap out of Ginyu T__T

Ginyu: Change!!!
Bulma: WTF!?
Ginyu: Aww yeah I haz boobs!

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

The problem with FM2k2 is...it seemed to difficult to catch onto, and as for MUGEN, there's no story mode. I was going to use that first until I found out it was only capable of an Arcade Mode.

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

Ah, nice to have another supporter!

I'm happy at the progress that I've made so far, I'd say the battle system is almost complete. I still got to add health/ki effects and work on the AI some, but what I've done so far seems to be lookin' good! There might be a Alpha by January(if I'm not too busy playing Ultimate Tenkaichi--if I get it that is). I might even be able to update with some screenshots here soon.

I wrote up a little faq and other things in the main post. Those aren't all of Bardock's attack combinations. Stay tuned.

Re: Dragon ball Kai: Saiyan Royale!

I've been testing the new battle systems I've come across for XP and I must say I'm impressed. There's a key sequence combo similar to what I've tried doing with rm2k3. I think I might make the switch once I figure out the coding of it and able to apply it to myself.
