You should try using the search function, almost any simple thing is already well documented in this forum. For your question check this thread written by Mateo.

You can insert these with AgiXP if you uncheck the box for "Pokemon/Trainer inserting" and manually tell it the offset. Type "&h" (without the quotes) in front of the offset to tell it that you are giving it a hex location instead of decimal. Be careful and make a backup before doing this, since if the picture ends up being larger when compressed than the old one it may overwrite something. I haven't yet found the pointers to insert these properly, but I will update this when I do.

Re: How to hack backpic of pokemon trainer on Pokemon Gold?

I've attempted that and it makes my ROM crash...(possibly because the file size is bigger even if it is 48x48) Nobody has actually made a tutorial of this, or how to insert a new picture and repoint it to that image. When I try to insert it like this, Hiro's backsprite still shows up, even if I have tried to follow the AGIXP tutorial as closely as possible (even unchecking Trainer/Pokemon sprite). So what my guess was was to overwrite the offset given for the backsprite, but it ends up crashing the ROM and rendering it unreadable T__T.

So could anybody explain and clarify? Does the backsprite loding need repointing or what? And how do I do so?

You got to make sure the backsprite has the compressed colors on it first, blue, black and yellow. After, it has to be the same length and height as the original(I'm going for what I "think" I know, it's been about a month since I did this..).

Make sure it is a BMP file, than choose it first when opening AgiXP. Click the "Next" button. You'll be graced with colors, they should be correct. Click "Next". "Next" again. Next again. Choose the rom this time and click "Next". Uncheck all boxes, and put "&H3F9CB" into the offset box and click "Next". Should be inserted after this.

By "shorter", you meant that it may use less space than the original sprite does, right?
In that case, yes.
