You can use whatever ROMs you want, of course, but when working with other people it helps to use an identical ROM. These are the English Pokémon ROMs I use:
Pokémon Red (UE) [S][!].gb (MD5 3d45c1ee9abd5738df46d2bdda8b57dc)
Pokémon - Blue Version (UE) [S][!].gb (MD5 50927e843568814f7ed45ec4f944bd8b)
Pokémon - Yellow Version (UE) [C][!].gbc (MD5 d9290db87b1f0a23b89f99ee4469e34b)
Pokémon - Gold Version (UE) [C][!].gbc (MD5 a6924ce1f9ad2228e1c6580779b23878)
Pokémon - Silver Version (UE) [C][!].gbc (MD5 2ac166169354e84d0e2d7cf4cb40b312)
Pokémon - Crystal Version (UE) (V1.0) [C][!].gbc (MD5 9f2922b235a5eeb78d65594e82ef5dde)
Pokémon - Crystal Version (UE) (V1.1) [C][!].gbc (MD5 301899b8087289a6436b0a241fbbb474)
Pocket Monsters - Red Version (J) (V1.0) [S].gb (MD5 912d4f77d118390a2e2c42b2016a19d4)
Pocket Monsters - Red Version (J) (V1.1) [S].gb (MD5 4c44844f8d5aa3305a0cf2c95cf96333)
Pocket Monsters - Green Version (J) (V1.0) [S].gb (MD5 e30ffbab1f239f09b226477d84db1368)
Pocket Monsters - Green Version (J) (V1.1) [S].gb (MD5 16ddd8897092936fbc0e286c6a6b23a2)
Pocket Monsters - Blue Version (J) [S].gb (MD5 c1adf0a77809ac91d905a4828888a2f0)
Different filenames don’t necessarily mean different ROMs. Check the MD5 hash to be sure.
(Does anyone know of a working GoodGBX torrent? It would be relevant to link to it here.)

By the way, what's difference between the two Crystal versions. Presumably bug fixes; but do you know more details?

I'd advise to use a good and recent no-intro torrent. Their work is way better and ore systematic.

These changes are all concerned with the PokéDex. The Details Submenu (when you press A on the name of a Pokémon) has its own status variable now. This is probably due to the effect that there might be some runtime conditional bugs, because the status variable is actually the same that is used for something else during battle. So when you're shown the details submenu after catching a Pokémon, there might have been a bug there. I doubt it though.

This corrupts the tilemap for the (untranslated) Mobile Stadium 2 Link. This is probably not intentional. It looks like this file has been converted from Unix to Windows newlines as if it were a text file, i.e. single 0x0A --> 0x0D 0x0A. and single 0x0D --> 0x0D 0x0A.

No idea, this isn't code, but I couldn't find a pointer on the quick.
EDIT: The data curiously starts with ASCII "base"... hmmm...
So basically half of the v1.1 update is actually an accidental file conversion :-/

You can try to hide yourself in this world of pretend; when the paper's crumpled up, it can't be perfect again.

Can't you check with no-intro.org for that?
