I created an account to just say thank you so much for the incredible work done on this mod.

The changes have reengaged my enthusiasm for Pokemon and assembly.

Gone are the days of removing characters and writing all offsets for dialogue to keep a running total of how much space i have free for mods.

Congrats and thanks once again!

You're welcome! I haven't done much development with 3.0 lately, but I have been writing goal-oriented tutorials for pokecrystal since it can be tough to find things among all the .asm files. (Also helping with overworld maps for Red++.)

I hope to encourage more people to work with the disassembly. The Gen 3 pokeruby and pokeemerald will be really impressive when they're finished, and even with Gen 2, you can accomplish things like this (that's Coral) or this (Orange).

Re: Pokémon Polished Crystal 2.2.0

I spent a lot of time when i was 13/14 building maps for pokemon red and blue with GoldMap.

I couldn't believe that i was able to make changes to my favourite games haha.

It seems to have expended so far from when i was a kid though.

When i saw the first rain drop in Azalea Town today i actually yelled a little i got so excited and my partner looked at me like i was an idiot!

Ive been playing on the new Odroid-Go and the nostagia is hitting me so hard haha.

Press Left+B at the title screen to reset the initial options. (You can also press Down+B to reset the clock.)

Re: Pokémon Polished Crystal 2.2.0

I know you mentioned there were some areas that were unfinished, but thought it was mostly Kanto.

The new route areas like the mountains leading to yellow forest, or Violet outskirts seem to lack pokemon encounter data, is that a known yet to be completed item?

Not yet. :/ I haven't done much with Polished Crystal in the past few... months. Partly I've been busy with work outside ROM hacking, and also I've been helping more with pokecrystal and Red++. Most of my interest lately has been with graphical work, like the Red++ region maps, not dealing with all the bugs and missing content in PC. But don't worry, it's not abandoned and will be completed at some point.

(snip)

Thanks a lot for your detailed review! I've had it in an open tab for a while, wanting to pay attention to all your points. It's really helpful for making the final 3.0 release better.

Breeders can be rebattled, just like in Gen 5.

Cut trees should never respawn. I don't know why they are for you.

I don't think there are any extraneous items. The held items have useful roles in competitive battling, and the evolution items are just canon.

There are no plans for new items, but if I really needed one, I'd remove a not-yet-used item like Honey or the Ice Stone. (Both intended for features that won't make it into 3.0.)

Violet Outskirts are unfinished; they'll be properly blocked later. Actually, I don't have to block them entirely, but I do want to keep the Lyra fight pre-Mahogany. Maybe if you try going north from the Outskirts early, Lyra will ask to battle you, and if you can beat her, then you're okay to take on Team Rocket and Pryce before Chuck and Jasmine.

The level curve isn't perfect, but I don't want to adjust the levels of every single NPC and wild Pokémon again just for a slight rebalance.

Celadon University is next to the Gym. Do explore it, it's a complete area with pretty much content. :)

The inverse battle is surprisingly simple—it just checks whether to use the standard type chart or the inverse one, depending on the battle type.

I'm glad you appreciate the new routes. I wanted to use some Pokéwalker locations as a way of demaking that HG/SS feature; also, I'm a fan of large regional maps, and it's fun to make use of empty space instead of flood-filling it with trees or mountains.

Shamouti's wild Pokémon and NPCs definitely need work, but IIRC I already coded in the main movie cameo. How close are you to completing the Pokédex?

Some of the bugs you report—Cut trees reappearing, automatic Bicycle, getting trapped, triggering the Ilex Lyra event early—I can't reproduce, and they sound like some kind of corruption issue. Like reusing a save file with an updated ROM, or using a broken emulator. If your RAM is corrupted, you can end up messing with "switches" that record which events have/haven't happened, e.g. which trees are Cut, or which cutscenes need to be triggered.

Oh, ok, I wait it, thank you, perhaps will be possible copy it to my project, I miss only the way to switch to the battle type during the safari game and the time, but the battle type works, also if is a bit buggy. :)

Are these two projects going to eventually merge into one? It's really cool seeing both of these projects flourish but I can't help but think that it's almost double the work that you both are doing.

Also, I got to go through some more of the extra features in the game. I haven't completed the Pokedex yet (I did on 2.2.0) so I definitely haven't gone through everything. I LOVE the Imakuni battle. That's such a wonderful throwback and I hope more than a few people understand that reference.

I'm still having the event reset issue, but I'll probably just end up leaving my current game where it is and coming back this universe when 3.0 is finished. If I encounter anything in that version, I'll take more detailed notes for you.

Lastly, how do you set out to make new maps? Do you sketch something out on graph paper beforehand or do you just use a romhacking map editing tool to do it directly? And how do you keep all the other maps in sync with each other? I tried to expand Cherrygrove city by one tile in each direction and the map went crazy.

Cheers!

There's no extra work. Red++ 3.0 has switched to using Polished Crystal as a base, so any engine feature one of us codes can be quickly ported to the other. Meanwhile their content is completely different; Red++ is an RBY remake, PC is a GSC remake.

I make maps with Polished Map, export them as PNG images, and stitch the images into giant region maps with paint.net. But Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, etc would also work.

Re: Pokémon Polished Crystal 2.2.0

Rangi I have another question for you. You know if there is a way via script to print the image of a pokémon by index number also if you aren't in the pokédex or you aren't in the photo studio? I want to print the museum's fossils but you can't see them in the pokédex and you can't catch them to go in the photo studio in Cianwood... I made them recycling 2 ????? unused pokémons.

I guess to clarify, because both games are based off Polished Crystal, is the only real difference that Red++ is the RBY plotline whereas PC is the GSC plotline? Or are there other differences? I ask because I don't really care for the RBY plot that much. Or do some Johto plotlines show up (finding Entei, Raikou, Suicune, stopping the Red Gyarados plot etc)?

Does stitching them together into regional maps with just the pngs transfer to the game? I guess I thought there was some coding that has to be done to make all the individual maps line up with each other.

Cheers!

Re: Pokémon Polished Crystal 2.2.0

It's the RBY plotline, but then it extends it into a pre-gsc Johto. It also has major graphical updates from Polished. No, they will not be merged into the same hack because they are totally different games. No, the original GSC plotlines do not happen, because that would make no sense. New plotlines happen in Johto, because RBY took place 3 years before the GSC plot happened.

Hah! I had already downloaded this a few months ago. This is a neat program. Is there anyway to know which tileset to use in advance? Or do you have a list you keep of 'New Bark Town is Tileset Johto 1'?

Also, I'm pretty sure you were right about my beta of PC 3.0 being corrupted. My items in my PC are all wonky. Sadness. Now I just eagerly await the full release of 3.0 :D

The list is called data/maps/maps.asm. ;) Likewise, map dimensions are in constants/map_constants.asm, although those get read automatically.

Re: Pokémon Polished Crystal 2.2.0

Finally got to do a play through of Polished Crystal. Wow, absolutely fantastic. I was playing the 3.0 Bets and was completely blown away by the effort put into this. I know some maps aren’t quite finished, so I’m excited to see those places fully fleshed out such as the Museum and the tunnel between Goldenrod and Route 32. Not sure if my game was just glitching, but there’s a skier in the Ice Path with a Lapras and two Dewgongs. After the Lapras fainted, she just kept switching out her Dewgongs without attacking until I knocked them out. Also, any possibility you could use a different Celebi menu icon? After catching Celebi, it uses the sprite from the event, so in the party menu and Daycare, Celebi is always facing backwards which looks a bit awkward compared to all the other sprites.

Loved the music in the Lugia chamber! Glad it wasn’t stopped when I went to use surf! Do you think you could add that feature to other special caves such as Tohjo Falls or Mt Mortar? The music is so good, I don’t want it to stop.

Is there a way to view what the potential color variations of Pokémon look like? I ran into a wild Gligar that had an awesome color variation, but haven’t ran into one since that time. Makes me wonder what other color variations of Pokémon I might run into. I’d enjoy hunting for the ones I like!

Kudos Ragni! Hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next update!
