Some questions for starting out

So I've been wanting to make a gen 1 hack for several years now, because it seemed like a nice challenge and because nostalgia is an amazing thing. I've recently become re-interested in the project and before I even start I'm wondering about any known limitations people have discovered. Like can't do this or can't do that no matter what. I've seen a lot of amazing creative things so it doesn't seem like there really isn't any limits if you are good enough. Also from what I have seen this is one of the most active forums for gen 1 which isn't saying much since barely anyone seems to be hacking gen 1. Is there any other places people frequent with good resources for gen 1? I have loads of game programming experience but not much in assembly so I could use as many resources as possible. Thanks!

Edit: I probably should have done more research because I basically just making red++. RIP
