You can record directly with the VBA emulator by clicking on Tools -> Record. You can either record the audio as WAV or the video as AVI. Since AVI videos weight a lot, I recommend changing the video file's format to mp4 using HandBrake

I'm using VBA-M and its recording option just copies game state and an input log, and replays that on top of the ROM file for you. So plain VBA records AVI? Good to know, thank you.

Oh wow, thanks, Mmmmmm!

I see in SoundCloud's Related Tracks that FroggestSpirit is continuing to demix D/P/Pt's music. Good to know.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I noticed your Florama Town track. It is decent. However, have you considered remixing the Night version? I think it would work much better with the GB sound system.

I like a lot of what you've done besides that, good work! I liked the Littleroot Town remix in particular, which turned out really well within the GB sound system.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Hi, Mmmmmm! If you have the time and want to demix these particular tracks, here are some that would be useful in Polished Crystal:

Battle! Zinnia (OR/AS): for the battle with Lawrence (he just uses the regular trainer theme right now)
Battle! Champion (OR/AS) (or R/S/E): for the battle with Steven (I hope to use FroggestSpirit's demix for Cynthia)
Mt. Chimney (OR/AS) (or R/S/E): for a new cave in Kanto (connecting Route 10 to the northern sea and Cerulean Cape)
Battle! Wally (OR/AS): for a final battle with Lyra (she's not in the post-game yet)

That's in priority order. The new cave and Lyra have acceptable alternatives, but Lawrence needs a battle theme and Zinnia's sounds cool (and fits him as a mysterious legend-related person).

Thanks for the music you've done up to now. I'm designing a new forest area that will really benefit from your White Treehollow track. New music is great for setting these maps apart from every other place with trees and rocks.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I've been pretty busy lately, but I managed to get something done. I've wanted to do this for a while, and I think it came out well.

Route 47:
http://pastebin.com/aSDuVfDW
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

It's mostly based on the GB Sounds version of this song, but I made a few changes to make it more in line with the original, like using the waveform for the melody toward the end of the loop.

I can definitely do all those songs, Rangi. Zinnia's and Wally's themes might take a bit due to the lack of MIDI and my lack of free time, but the string of exams I've been sucked into is almost over so I should hopefully have relatively more time for a little while. With luck I'll have all four done by the end of the month.

Thank you, that would be great. I expect Polished Crystal 3.0's planned features to take at least another month to finish, so take your time with the music, and good luck with exams.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

So I had a brain fart and started working on the encounter theme for Zinnia instead of the battle theme. I realized my mistake before completing it, but was far enough that I figured I should complete it first and make it a double-upload, so I did. Sorry if this delays my future deliveries by the day it took to make.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

:D Wow, you're fast. The encounter music is a nice bonus, it can take the place of that unused monotonous encounter track from Yellow. And time really isn't an issue, I doubt I'll have all of 3.0's features done first.

This is one of those tracks like Iris's that sounds dramatic even converted to 8-bit. Great job!

If it's not too much, can you also do the HGSS Safari Zone Gate track?

That, and the Zone itself, were the next two tracks I was planning on doing before you gave me your requests, so I can definitely do that.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I'm dreadfully sorry for how long this took. It wasn't a difficult cover, but I had trouble getting motivated to make it because the MIDI2GSC converter was acting strange (it was mixing different parts of the song around within channels, making a mess that I didn't want to touch). I ended up doing it by hand like I used to.

Vs. Hoenn Champion:

I'll try to release the other two Hoenn covers simultaneously.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

As I hoped, I was able to get all four Hoenn covers done by the end of the month.

After doing Mt. Chimney I also decided to do the little jingle that plays during the lift sequence to get there, since it was only a few seconds.

Chimney Lift:
http://pastebin.com/pdd9nJqq

Mt. Chimney:
http://pastebin.com/Yivqb9Tq
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

Vs. Wally:
http://pastebin.com/7vneX9pj
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … -gbc-8-bit

I had some deliberation on whether to rewrite the end of Mt. Chimney's loop to remove the percussion or to try to keep it faithful, and ended up choosing the latter. I think it turned out passable but I apologize if it's not alright on your end.

Just as a suggestion/request for Polished Crystal, for Lyra's final battle when you use Wally's theme, could you see if you can find a second, differently posed sprite? I'm thinking of how Blue, Silver, and ORAS Wally all have different battle stances during their final rival fights, and all of them except Silver have music changes like what you're planning with Lyra, so it seems fitting that she follow the trend.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Thanks a lot! Mt. Chimney's percussion sounds just fine as-is. About Wally's theme: is it just me, or is that sequence of nine notes at 0:30 a bit off-key? It sounds different to me in the original, but that could be due to the instruments.

(Actually, even Silver's final fight uses the Champion music.) And yeah, I'd like to have Lyra in a more confident/aggressive pose for the last battle. Will see if I can make a new sprite or if one of the pixel artists here can help.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

All the notes in that section are definitely on-key, the song is in G-major and the only blue notes are the occasional D#, which doesn't come up in that specific section. It's definitely an odd harmony but I'm pretty sure it's what the note sequence is, the harmony just isn't very loud in that section so you might not pick it up as well in the original with all the different things going on in the song.

I never knew Silver had the Champion battle during his 7th fight. This makes me wonder if I just never fought him at the Indigo Plateau until now, outside a couple ROMhacks (I remember fighting him in TPPAC and him having the Champion music but assumed that was added by the hackers). I guess you learn something new every day.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

So here's my first attempt at an alternate Lyra sprite. Went with it because I had the pose already, but frowning and holding up the Poké Ball might be more mood-appropriate. (Haven't written the cutscene yet, it could go either way.)

oDH5BVK.png

Here's the sprite and music in battle. Just ignore the bugs.

I think the tracks works very well in-game. Cries and move effects play over it, but that's a problem with all Gen 2 music.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Man, that video reminds me of why I always try to keep the main melody in channel 2. I had to use channel 1 this time because there are certain functions in the audio that can only work in channel 1 (this specific one was the rapidly descending pitch that I wanted try) and the way it keeps cutting out hurts me inside. It's a problem with all Gen 2 music though, you're right.

The sprite looks good by the way, it fits the character.

I don't suppose it's possible to have most of the main melody on channel 1, and swap their roles just for that section?

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

That's actually a good idea. It slightly increased the size of the code, but that's worth the better in-battle audio. I updated the pastebin with the flipped channels, you should re-grab it.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

I did the X & Y Title Screen theme.  It's a big larger than most songs, mostly because it doesn't repeat as often.  I think it came out pretty well, but I'd love feedback.

Listen: https://soundcloud.com/huderlem/pokemon … een-devamp
Code: https://github.com/huderlem/pokestyle-m … screen.asm

EDIT:  @Rangi, you should have the Wally music play when she starts talking, rather than after the battle starts.  That's what was done in ORAS, and it was a cool moment, in my opinion.

EDIT: And to comment on Shantytown's XY title theme, I like it, but I think it could be improved a bit if you tried to squeeze in the accented brass section in the opening bars. Everything after 0:11 is great, it's just that intro that could pop a bit more.

Re: GSC Music Covers (with code)

Thank you, Mmmmmm! There are now 19 of your demixes in Polished Crystal. :) (Although I haven't found a good circumstance to play the spiky-eared Pichu theme... The dialog when you receive the GS Ball Pichu doesn't really last long enough to bother.) It wouldn't be the same without them.

@Rangi, you should have the Wally music play when she starts talking, rather than after the battle starts.  That's what was done in ORAS, and it was a cool moment, in my opinion.

You're right about that cutscene. I'll see if that can be done without major audio engine edits. Probably. Edit: Yeah, it just takes a few lines, and the effect is quite cool.

There's a more peaceful lead-up to to the battle music... Mmmmmm, do you have time for track #20? Edit: And the post-battle music? This cutscene just isn't as dramatic with Lyra's standard encounter/departure music. Silence would be acceptable, at least.

I did Dewford Town because it's a cool song:
https://github.com/huderlem/pokestyle-m … d_town.asm

Mmmmmmm, I think you do really well at varying the instruments.  I think one thing I need to improve on is using Channel 3 (wave channel) for the melodies more often.  I tend to use it mostly for the bass line.
