Hi, I am on another forum getting some assistance with my first hack of Pokemon Red. I was directed here since this forum is dedicated to Gen 1 & 2. I'm doing my best to find old threads and not hash out the same questions over and over, but sometimes I just don't know where to look for resources.
Anyways, I'm in the process of rewriting the dialog text, since that's pretty straightforward and I'm play testing the changes as I go. If I make a save file after updating my ROM with changes, will I be able to load that file and pick up where I left off? I feel like this is unlikely, but if there were a way to do it, it sure would make this simpler than having to replay the whole intro sequences over and over.
And about mapping (although it isn't pressing atm), after I've compiled a new edited ROM for RBY, would I still be able to open it in a program like Pokemap to move some things around? I feel like I still haven't been able to wrap my head around anything other than moving tiles with that program..
Thanks for the assist!
The answer to both of these questions is: "It depends".
So long as what you are doing:
1) Doesn't shift values around in RAM (adding new Pokemon, various other things that you would consciously know you were doing)
2) Doesn't move the collision data for the tileset you are saved on around
3) Other random circumstances that slip my mind
Then you should be able to continue your existing save. Especially since all you are doing is just editing text, that should have any impact on your save at all.
As for mapping, I *think* that those would still be in the same place unless you intentionally moved them, since the text you are editing is usually stored in banks by itself with other text, so that shouldn't shift the map data around. If you were like changing the amount of events on a map or something, that would shift the data around and probably break "normal" map editors, but I don't think editing text like you have been should hurt that. That said, I seem to remember that most map editors from back in the day used external files to list where map/event data was for different maps, so you could theoretically edit that if something you did shifted them (but that would get tedious and not be the best option).
I'm not entirely sure what other people do for mapping. I still have a beta-test version of GlitchMap that I've been using on Red++, and it only supports editing maps, not events at the moment. So I have to manually edit events. Other people undoubtedly have other ways of doing it that they can suggest to you as well.

Cool. This should help to make sure every character that's needs it gets a new dialog.
Is GlitchMap still around for download? I don't mind learning manual event editing, it's just going to take a lot of practice (and/or tutorials; there don't seem to be many for Gen 1) because I can't add new NPCs without blowing up their map location yet.
It was never made available for download, there was just an online preview (as far as public releases go). I only have a copy because I was helping with beta testing. You would need to contact Pokeglitch and talk to him about the current status of GlitchMap, last time I checked, he wasn't considering it ready for an official release yet.

So hello again!
I think for the time being I'm going to plan around using pokemap and some of the older editors to change the game, after I've done what I can with pokered. I have the pokemarts edited how I want, and I'm still working on text. But there are still some things remaining before I have this ready for testing:
I finally had success with disabling warps, and this is a minor thing; but how do I make the doors have collision? It's weird to be able to walk on top of a locked door.
Also, what needs to be done to an NPC to have them give the player an item or pokemon? I'm still working on getting a new working NPC into the game and giving them their own text set.
I would also like to find what makes key items undroppable and change some of that. Is that in the same area as when an item may be used?
