How to change the list of names in the GS intro

[ I am French, if I make some mistakes, correct me please ;) ]

You can found in the rom the menu structure for the name selection of the hiro.

The structure is (in the English rom, start at 60DC) :

00 % Vertical position of the menu
00 % Horizontal position of the menu
0B % Position of the right border of the menu
0A % Position of the bottom border of the menu
E160 % What is that ? A pointer ?
01 % Default choice
91 % ? What is that ?
05 % Number of choices
[NEW NAME] % Choice 1
50
[GOLD] % Choice 2
50
[HIRO]
50
[TAYLOR]
50
[KARL] % Choice 5
50
02 % Horizontal position of the menu title (in ref. to the border of the menu)
[NAME] % Menu title
50

---

Example : I want to change the list, select by default my name and resize the box , and finaly move it
(I don't know why, the menu title is hidden when I reduce the number of names...)

I didn't really understand what you wanted help with...

However, the menu structure is documented in great detail in my Scripting Compendium, specifically here for 0x4F and 0x57.

I think I may have seen this written somewhere on here. It showed different parts of the intro that you could disable by typing 00s over different things. I'll see if I can find it.


EDIT: Ok, this thread has info on several things about the naming screen, and you can probably look around in the same area for the codes to load the player sprite and disable it.

Thanks, but i never used ASM language before (but i have some notions)

I'm looking for a tut (and easily comprehensible, I'm French).

What tools needed for ASM disassembling ?
And how to reassembling the code ?

EDIT : how to use the ASM disassembler in VBA ?

Well VBA does not have an ASM Disassembler. Others like No$GB and BGB have debuggers which let you see it. I'm sure someone like IIMarkus or Tauwasser could recommend a good disassembler and assembler for you.

Well yeah there's that but from what I've heard its a bit unusable for anything practical. I don't think it lets you set breakpoints and things.

Lucid, you may already know that RGBDS is a good assembler. But it is best used for making new games, because it ’s not made for editing old games. So, entering the opcodes in a hex editor is probably the best for now.

For small ASM hacks you could use this program. It's like hex-editing, since it doesn't actually re-assemble the ROM but just overwrites the existing data, but is more handy than an hex-editor because you don't have to convert opcodes to their hexadecimal value, but can write mnemonics instead.

If you plan to do bigger ASM hacks you may want to use a real assembler/linker, like RGBDS or WLA or whatever you find fitting.
