24-hour ROM hackathon starting at 2013-05-12 08:00 CST (GMT -5)

We are a group of anonymous ROM hackers that will be hacking together for 24 hours to collaborate on a ROM hack starting on 2013-05-12 at 08:00 CST (GMT -5). We just want to have fun. Anyone is welcome to participate, but you should make sure you are able to use the toolchain prior to the beginning of the event because we will be too busy hacking to help you, so you are encouraged to seek out assistance before the event if you want to join us.

All romathon communication will occur through the #skeetendo IRC channel on the nucleus.kafuka.org server. We are collaborating through the pokecrystal-demo git repo.

Here are the rules:

(1) There's no story. Just make stuff.

(2) All outdoor maps are 20x20.

(3) No "routes".

(4) No endless fields of Rattata/Pidgey/Zubat. When in doubt, just ask the group.

(5) All work must be based on pokecrystal.git (actually we will be using a hack repository called pokecrystal-demo.git, see below for details).

(6) Commit, push and pull request regularly. Source code must be included (no binary blobs for asm; never lz files) when you make a pull request.

(7) Code must compile, and ideally not cause the game to crash. Bonus points for adding jython tests (that work with vba-clojure (see extras/vba.py)) with changes that you submit in pull requests. This lets us automatically test the game for bugs.

(8) Once you make a pull request, the content is owned by the community (either public domain or CC-BY-SA) and can be edited by anyone. But also, we will not tolerate random defacement.

(9) Anyone is allowed to participate, but nobody is required to provide help on setting up the toolchain during the event (so either do this before, or do it on your own, etc.).

All contributions are welcome, including content, mapping, scripting, engine hacks, stat hacks, and even appropriate graphics like tilesets, frontpics, backpics, palettes, whatever.

This is a hack based on pokecrystal. You can find out more about pokecrystal here:

https://github.com/kanzure/pokecrystal

The hack repository is pokecrystal-demo:

https://github.com/kanzure/pokecrystal-demo

We are using this wiki during the hackathon:

Thank you.

I should add that even though it seems like, PokeCrystal isn't that hard to use. So if any new rom hackers are out there willing to try, then join the chatroom and you will be offered help on how to get things set up. PokeCrystal allows you to work at a free and steady pace, it is your playground. It's very easy to use. And makes rom hacking so much easier.

So join us if you want to particpate, we don't bite.

You can use cygwin if you're using windows.

Join #skeetendo on nucleus.kafuka.org (if you don't have an irc client, try mibbit) and we'll help you get set up.

If you're going to be on your phone for a long time, you can try mirggi. Actually you need a computer to compile anyway.

Because that's what github is for to begin with. When people commit their changes, you just pull them and boom! There you go. This way is also fruitful because people don't have to share a rom making things even more tedious when you apply changes.

A quick google search with this "Pokemon - Crystal Version (UE) (V1.0) [C][!].gbc" should yield results.

You don't have to be, anonymity is not mandatory. As for why, consider the other way around: requiring a real identity is way more restricting than being okay with anonymous contributors.

But why mention anything in the first place about anonymity? Frankly, that's because I like hearing the sound of my own voice, and I like saying anonymity too. So, there you go.

Also, I am happy to encourage members of this community to continue using pseudonyms or being anonymous or whatever, which I consider a positive benefit of that particular wording.

Re: 24-hour ROM hackathon starting at 2013-05-12 08:00 CST (GMT -5)

Here is the latest build of pokecrystal-demo.  Most of what's in was done in a single day, except for some later bugfixes.  Unfortunately, an intro wasn't finished in time, so while there is a scripted battle included, you never get a Pokémon, so it just skips the battle.  Do look around and enjoy, though.  Source's available over here:
https://github.com/kanzure/pokecrystal-demo
Pull requests (still) welcome if you wish to expand on it, but remember to merge pokecrystal in first.
