Rearranging subforums (and more)

I’ve been thinking about how to best arrange the forum.

Right now it looks like this:

  • Announcements
    handle_list_tag('
    [*]Site Announcements

  • ', '*')
    [/*]
  • Skeetendo
    handle_list_tag('
    [*]Skeetendo Hacks

  • Skeetendo Tools

  • ', '*')
    [/*]
  • User‐Created
    handle_list_tag('
    [*]Game Boy Color Hacks

  • Game Boy Advance Hacks

  • Tools

  • Idea Discussion

  • ', '*')
    [/*]
  • Documents and Tutorials
    handle_list_tag('
    [*]General Documents

  • Generation I

  • Generation II

  • Generation III+

  • ', '*')
    [/*]
  • Off‐Topic
    handle_list_tag('
    [*]General Discussion

  • General Pokémon

  • ', '*')
    [/*]
GBA

The GBA sections are stagnant. Currently 6 threads in Hacks and 2 in Docs. I’m thinking of merging the two together since they don’t get much activity, and opening it up to DS discussion as well, not that I expect to see much of that activity here.

Duplication in Ideas vs. Documents

A lot of what happens in Ideas is “I want to change this. How do you think it works?” In practice, this turns into a real document—because it can start with a question and end with an answer, sometimes a thorough one. And even when there is no answer, the discussion may contain more in‐depth info about the subject than anything else.

Example, example, example, example.

I think it would make sense to merge Ideas into Documents and change the description to “Discussion, Documents & Tutorials” or something. Otherwise when looking up how to do something I have to check both “Generation x Documents & Tutorials” and “Idea Discussion.”

Re: Rearranging subforums (and more)

I like the idea of merging GB GBA hack into one section because there is not much GBA hack here.

Also, where something like devamp and pixel-art will go to?

Probably cross‐gen.

Re: Rearranging subforums (and more)

Maybe, make a forum for tutorials only then the discussion goes to discussion thread. That would make it more organized. And about activity, i think that someone should fill the tutorial section with good and frienly tutorial. Make and post the most needed tutorial for beginner e.g. Friendly tutorial for hex editing with some simple and easy example, how to edit the map connection data, in-depth tutorial for map editor (honestly, i'm still confuse with Megamap) etc. That should answer beginner question rather than making a new threads...

That is a pretty good idea, Cloud. Also, I'll see if I have any tutorials that I haven't posted, and see what I can do about some of them that are needed and try to get them up.

Re: Rearranging subforums (and more)

I think that keeping the "idea discussions" would be good, and then moving threads with valuable information into Documents Board would be the procedure, while leaving in "Ideas" the 'unproductive' threads. This is to prevent an overgrow of threads in doc area that could cause difficulty in finding certain docs.
But, once said that, I understand that it can become really annoying for you to move threads so often, not to mention that this system would be rather chaotic; so, I believe that your solution (redistributing ideas in their respective generation board) is a better compromise.

+2

We should keep the idea section. In my opinion, the Idea Discussion is suited for general hacking talk (similar to "ROM Hacking" at PC). I know it means a lot of work to examine every thread and move the "documents ones" in the document subforum but in the end, it turns out great to have a compendium-like document section. (maybe with a sticky "Table of contents/Index" thread)

Re: Rearranging subforums (and more)

I see the advantage of having a separate ideas forum. I’ll keep that where it is for now, but may move several threads in or out in the near future.

I’ve merged the GBA boards, since nobody disagreed with that.

Re: Rearranging subforums (and more)

Perhaps it would be handy if when someone answers a question in the discussion board, they do it by posting a standalone tutorial, and then linking to it. That way the tutorial is in the documents section to help users and keep it organized, and specific questions from the original asker can continue in the discussion thread, while the general tutorial remains separate, so as to keep the specific information from getting bogged down in the discussion.
