So I've grown up with computers, I know how to build them and take them apart, I know how to fix certain problems. I've kinda worked with programming a few times in many forms, such as scripting, programming itself..using hex editors and looking at data and modifying it, it's all fun--to me that is.
So here's my dilemma, I'm having a hard time choosing between IT consultant and Software Development. Both seem fun, the problems is that IT consulting, while has its adventages such as traveling, helping other companies fix their tech problems and so on, it has the downside of keeping you away from home, when you want to spend time with family. Software Development on the other hand, if done right, you can stay home any time and work on projects and assist others with programming. The con I think is the inability of traveling. I think anyways.
The technology section is seems mostly dead at times, but I'm wondering if there is anyone here is sufficent advice or someone who's made or currently making a career out of a form of technology. What is the best option to go with?

If you decide to become a consultant, you'll get to work with lots of "smaller" problems on different kinds of systems. If you choose Software Development on the other hand, you'll get to be part of making some greater and more advancing.
I'd probably go for Software Development but it's totally your choice. Choose whatever you feel suits you the most.

@comet: I meant inability. Traveling is no way a con.
@Miksy: Man, its just so hard to choose and I don't have a lot of time to decide. I wonder if I can somehow manage both in a profound way.

You shouldn't depend your choice on staying away from home or not.

I like shit to be simple, I like to be comfortable. For some it may be cool and all but I prefer to travel at least 2 times a month. Any more then that then things become unstable for me.

Considering your family's part is a big hindrance but it make things better and easier. Being a developer is my preferred choice, setting aside my family could help me be more independent and travelling is a once in a lifetime offer you shouldn't miss. A dedicated plan is the key for giving time to your family, just do it right. That's what I prefer.

IT is my dream. I want to become an IT expert. I am not bad at computers but i still have much more more to learn. A friend is helping me because he is very good when it comes to IT but my problem is that he won't help me at Pokemon hacking and hex editos because he hates Pokemon. In my class i was the guy who had the highset knowledge for computes. We also created a computer virus but we deleted it,my friend did it. I am now 15 years old. When i grow i will became an IT Consultant but it's a bit difficuilt for me.
