Here is a little patch for Gold, except all of Kanto's towns and routes use the Johto tileset.
Let me know if there is anything that doesn't look right or is funky or whatever, and I'll fix it ASAP.
v1.1: Fixed the tileset problem without routegates. Oh well.

If you use this for a hack, I don't really care if you give credit because this is something that requires very little effort.

I think it'd be a good idea to have a small hacks thread where there lists small-scale changes hacks (difficulty increases, tileset changes, music changes, etc).
Any particular reason why you've Johto-fied Kanto?
I agree there.
No reason really, mostly I've done it out of curiosity.
On a somewhat interesting side note, I've noticed distinct differences between the Kanto and Johto tilesets. The Kanto tileset (which is identical to the tileset used in Gen 1) is more urban in it's appearance, and it doesn't translate well into the Johto tileset, which seems to be more nature-oriented. They aren't really "backwards compatible" with each other, meaning even if you put in the correlating tile where it's supposed to go with the opposite tileset, you run into problems pretty often. I definitely prefer the Johto tileset over Kanto, so I enjoy tweaking the blocks and maps a bit to accomplish the "Johto-fication".
Yeah, I'm bored.

I can give you the tilesets if you like.
I already did it. But... it was never released.

The only difference between yours and Vitharix's is that his hack is on Gold and yours was on Red.

Freako, that is cool. I wanted to do that a while ago as well. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at using solely Johto tiles for a Red hack.

lol
By the way, you could use the Radio Tower tiles to map the outside of Silph Co. or Lavender Radio Tower.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this, but you've reminded me of a bug that likely happened.
I'm thinking that because I had to use the radio tower tileset for Lavender but there are no routegates, there could be buggy tiles that follow you around until a screen refresh.
I'm at work right now so I'll confirm when I get home.

Now that I think of it, the bug does happen. So it could work only on Saffron which has only route gates. The bug makes every other sprite look like the player OW with a brown palette.

Alright I will fix that tonight. That is the one area I did not look at when I was testing it. Should be a simple fix though.

Didn't explain myself clearly. I didn't check whether that bug happens in your hack. But, if you move from one map with one tileset to another map with another tileset, without a Route Gate (a screen reset) between, you get the bug I said. Found that out some years ago, while "experimenting".

Yeah, there was a problem. Thanks for pointing it out.
Anyway, it's fixed and I've updated the first post with a new download link.

Neat idea, I like how the outcome looks somehow familiar even though different. Have you thought about "Kanto-fying" Johto?

That seems like the logical next step, doesn't it? I don't know though, I think Johto would look weird with Kanto tiles.
I'm thinking that eventually I'll redo this to make it cleaner, because I had to skimp on a few things to make it look like Kanto. So I might do that along with a Kanto'd-Johto version sometime as well. To make it really good, I have to reorganize the maps just a little because of the blocks that are available. Some Kanto blocks don't have parallels in the Johto block data, and vice versa.

It wasn't a complete denial therefore the question. :P
Of course, replacing some tiles like the Tin Tower ones would look out of place with the Kanto brick tiles but it wouldn't look that bad on most of the maps:
