PokeMMO

Anyone try this out?

http://www.pokemmo.eu

It's basically Pokemon Fire Red online.  It even reads data straight from the ROM like maps and graphics.

The community can be extremely annoying sometimes though.  If you decide to give it a try, keep global chat off, because 90% of the messages on there are nothing but Fire Red questions that can easily be found by googling it. (e.g. "Where do you get Cut?")

Re: PokeMMO

I've never tries it out, but I've heard about it. I was always kind of skeptical about it though, thinking it might just be a scam or something. But since you're mentioning it, I figure its probably safe to try out. I'll give it a try some time when I have time.

Yeah there's a lot of scams out there pretending to be Pokemon games, but this one is legitimate.  Not only that, it's pretty fun even with the morons or elitist pricks you sometimes encounter.

I haven't played through Fire Red (or any official Pokemon game) in so long, this gave me a fresh perspective on what works with Pokemon games and what doesn't, which is going to help me out with Prism especially with all the meta gaming going on in this MMO.

I think hackers should play the official games once in a while.  It might just give them some ideas.

That's a good way to look at it. I try to do that sometimes, I'll see a feature that I like in the official games, and I'll brainstorm ideas to include a similar feature in a hack. It's like (for example) I was playing Ruby again recently, and decided I wanted to put a version of the Trendy Phrase in Spirits and Legends. I'm making it have more of an effect on the game than it did in the originals, though.

Re: PokeMMO

I tried out the MMO today for about an hour or so. It has a great foundation but I think it could use some serious improvement though. Here are the things that bothered me the most:

1.) There was a lot of lag for me. Walking through the warps often took 5-6 seconds for everything to be said and done. This could have been a problem on my end, but it made the game rather clunky to play.

2.) During your first battle against your rival the background palette was the grass one, like you were fighting in a grassy route even though you're in the lab.

3.) I picked Squirtle and his beginning moves were flip-floped. The first was Tail Whip, the second was Tackle. I couldn't find a way to change this in-battle and had to swap them outside of battle. Minor annoyance.

4.) When I beat my rival, his Pokemon didn't have the fainting animation, it just sat there with no health. Then the loser's text came up but it doesn't show the trainer sprite, it kept the fainted Pokemon on the screen with zero health before suddenly ending the battle.

5.) In a battle, the gender of your Pokemon isn't displayed.

6.) When throwing a Pokeball at a wild Pokemon, the Pokemon will appear in your little party box before the animation for the Pokeball shaking is finished. So you know instantaneously whether the Pokemon was caught or not.

7.) In a battle, the icon for being Poisoned shows up before the text "[Pokemon] was poisoned" or whatever the correct verbage is.

8.) You don't start with 3k Pokedollars. You can't buy Potions or Antidotes before entering Viridian Forest.

I think when everything is finished, it will be a great game and a great MMORPG. But as of right now there are just to many things that bother me for me to enjoy it more than an emulator or cartridge version. But huge props to them for making something like this work!

Also I play the original games quite a bit. I'm playing Black 2 right now, just got my second badge. Since I got into Nuzlocke challenges I went through and played most of the "third release" verions, i.e. Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum, using the Nuzlocke rules and had a blast doing it.

You can post those on the forums at forums.pokemmo.eu  Just keep in mind there's some douchebags on there.

Re: PokeMMO

Oh yeah, I tried this out back in late September.

Sometime after I caught Aerodactyl, I stopped playing alltogether to work on other things. :/

But it's fun.
