Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

You know how in the newer games, you can walk behind things (like rooftops, treetops, etc.)? Well, today I will explain how you can do this in Gold and Silver. Now, please note, there are a few limitations in this, but it is incredibly simple. With some creativity, it can be quite handy. If someone used a bit of ingenuity to modify an ASM routine, it could possibly be even more useful.

What you will need:

TLP
Tileset editor or Hex Editor
Creativity

This couldn't be simpler. To begin, open your rom in TLP and go to the offset x14639

Here you will see an odd tile, a white tile with a few black specs on it, and a grass tile, like this:

thesez.png

We will begin by erasing the odd tile and the grass tile. This will remove the green bushy overlay from your sprite when walking in tall grass, but this isn't a big deal. (For an example, play the halloween hack or the christmas hack and notice the way tall grass behaves)

Now what this does is give us the opportunity to have some fun. On any tile you want Hiro to be able to walk behind, set its collision byte to x10. This collision byte calls the bushy grass effect, without loading wild pokemon.

herev.png

Now we just get creative. When Hiro walks onto a tile with this collision effect, the bottom 2 tiles and the bottom half of the upper two tiles will be loaded ABOVE Hiro, with the first colour in the pallet loaded as transparency. To explain better, here is a picture.

examplen.png

In this image, the Black pixels are the area that will load behind Hiro, and the Red part will be displayed ABOVE Hiro, with the first colour loaded as transparent. While this makes roof walking difficult (due to the half tile nature currently employed) we can still use it for some fun things. Like this:

pokemongoldu.png

If you look, the tree top is showing up OVER Hiro. This would be a lot better if someone figures out how to hack the routine so that all 4 tiles load above the player instead of the way it is now, but with creativity you can still make this way work, and do some fun things with it. (EDIT: I resized the screenshot so you can see better.)

Very nice tutorial. I've been experimenting and messing with this recently, but it's great that you've posted a tutorial. Also, I couldn't remember the offset the grass tile was at, so this definitely came in handy. Thanks!

Re: Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

Wow, there was no need to post the exact same response 4 times lol. It means that in your hex editor or in Melash's tile editor (whichever one you like to use to edit collision data for a tileset), instead of putting "00" for a normal walking tile or "07" for an obstacle or "18" for normal tall grass, you would put "10" so you get the walk-behind effect without the wild pokemon loading on this tile.

EDIT: Here is a screenshot explaining what I am talking about.

Re: Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

No problem, glad you got it working!

Also @Melash- Sorry, overlooked your post at first with all the duplicates! Glad I could help. And yeah, I had to actually go through and find the grass animation myself because I realized I forgot to write down the offset when I disabled it in the halloween and christmas hacks.

He's just showing an example of what part of the tiles will load above and below Hiro. The black pixel area will always be below Hiro and never be loaded above, while the red ones will be loaded above Hiro, every time, provided they are not transparent. The transparent tiles are the tiles that are the lightest color, "white" that will be loaded below Hiro even if they are in the Red area.

So, did you mean I must erasing the 3 tiles which you highlight?

Re: Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

Leave the middle one alone, but erase the first and last ones. The middle one is the overlay for pushing a boulder with strength and is unrelated to this, it is just in the same place.

To further elaborate:

-The first tile is used if a bushy effect is called on an indoor map
-The second tile is the overlay for pushing a boulder
-The third tile is used if a bushy effect is called on an outdoor map

Exactly right. The grass would behave the same way it does in the Christmas hack.

Re: Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

If the green bushy image is still popping up around you while walking then maybe it didn't save when you erased it. Also, in order for tiles to look good when you walk behind them, you have to make sure you draw them so that they will. Example: the tree tops in those screenshots have the tree part use the last 3 colours in the pallet, and the grass part is the first colour.

Re: Walk behind things in Gold/Silver

Roofs could possibly work if you could make the top half of the tiles look like the sand tile or something.
